Rokugan & undead turning

kobold

First Post
I have not yet begun my Rokugan campaign, but as I gear up I notice it's filled w/ ghosts and other undead and no class to turn them (unless I missed it soewhere). Can anyone running a campaign using Rokugan tell me how this is effecting their campaigns? I thought about allowing humans and not just ratlings become shaman.

Well, I don't run a Rokugan camapaign, but a campaign with no clerics or Paladins. Just make sure that the Pcs havea way to deal with them even if it's destroying them through combat. The worst we had was a group of a dozen shadows. That caused the party trouble, but they were able to deal with it.

I own OA, and personally I use all the info in the book in my rokugan campaign, eventhough it's not all really "kosher" I do believe the shaman turnes undead. I'd like to see how the campaign goes. post later

Check out the Rokugan book, page 90, under Taint Binding.

Basically, Crab (mostly Kuni) Shugenja can turn Tainted creatures, which includes pretty much all undead and ghosts. They don't have a number of turns a day, instead they use up a spell slot.

As for effects...unless the campaign spends alot of time on The Wall or in Crab lands, encountering Undead and tainted creatures is more exception than rule. Any group dealing with Undead and tainted creatures alot will need special weapons for the task but they can handle it without a crutch like turning.;)

You don't have creatures of Rokugan do you? It has many undead in it that have little to do with the shadowlands. That said many of them have taint or spirit quality, and thus there are many spells that can deal with them.

Just got it a couple of days ago, so only now starting to familiarize myself with it.

Well, 16 Undead, six of which are non-shadowlands and half of those you either shouldn't have to fight or you won't find on the mortal plane. Interestingly, about two-thirds of the creatures in Creatures of Rokugan are Shadowlands critters.

I suspect this is really apples and oranges (or katana and tetsubo, if you will). You are right in saying there are several undead or spirits not of the shadowlands. I'm saying that in the basic Rokugan campaign world you won't run into mourning ghosts and isolated vengeful spirits all the time. And a patrol of samurai running into a pack of zombies in Crane lands is more likely to say "What the hell are they doing here, we're better destroy them and report in, something is seriously wrong here." rather than "Oh, another batch of undead to destroy."

Unless the GM is running a plot involving the Shadowlands overunning the empire or having the PCs specifically look into spirit and undead cases (X-Files Rokugan style, could be fun.) PC's will probably have more fights with humans than with Undead or spirits.

Shaman can Turn Undead at 3rd level... I think

No shamans in Rokugan, unfortunately. (Well, I think there's an obscure branch of the Phoenix clan that has shamans, but otherwise, all spellcasters in Rokugan are shugenja or sorcerers.)
