Roleplaying Playlists

First Post
In the new issue of Dragon, there's an article on using music in roleplaying, so I was wondering if you guys had playlists, and what was on it. I'm working on a playlist for dungeon delving, and I'll post it when it's done.

Does this article explain why people use music while they roleplay? Most of the time, I would say 99 times out of 100, the people I have gamed with have asked that we turn the music off, or that any music/noise in the background is disruptive.

We play with music, and the host makes the playlists from all kinds of sources. A lot of it is from the soundtracks of movies or games.

I find that instrumental is best, and when making playlists I look for the soundtracks to period movies. Anything with a huge thundering choir singing latin is ok by me.

The key to keeping it from being disruptive is to keep it quiet. Also, instrumental pieces distract less than those with lyrics.

Well, this is my playlist for dungeon delving:

Pray! ~ Apocalyptica
Magic and Sword ~ .Hack//Sign Soundtrack
Terminal Frost ~ Pink Floyd
Mind of the Mother Brain ~ Metroid
SK 983 ~ Royal Hunt
White Tornado ~ REM
Full Moon ~ Sonata Arctica
Fight Fire with Fire ~ Apocalyptica
Skull and Crossbones ~ Klaus Badelt
Struggle ~ Apocalyptica
The Hologram/Binary Sunset ~ John Williams
Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia) ~ The Flaming Lips

I can't list all the songs (as there are hundreds), but the actual playlists are:
Ship, Beach, Stream, and Forest (actually separate lists for specific areas of a Northern Crown 1-shot)
Desert
Freeport - Erie
Freeport - General
Pulp Action Theatre (for my Mutants and Masterminds Pulp Game)
Sword/Sorcery

I have Yakety Sax prepared for any encounter involving a chase, and, during climactic life-or-death battles with BBEGs, I like to play a techno remix of the Mortal Kombat theme. That's about it. :D

I react violently--like salt thrown on a slug--to anyone attempting to play metal of any kind during any game I'm in. Seriously--if I catch on quick enough that that's going to happen, I'll just get up and walk away, but if it happens after a few hours of play, I might need to throw down with the fool who tries to play some.

When I'm hosting the game (we rotate locations, so it's no more than about 20% of the time) I throw in a playlist, mostly from orchestral movie soundtracks. I've got three or four dozen or more movies that get regular play, though. Lately, I've also branched out a bit and picked up some Midnight Syndicate and stuff like that. I used to scoff at them, but lately I've come to appreciate their stuff quite a bit more--after picking some of it up last October for a Halloween party.

So, finished off a playlist for major battles

Destruction Preventer ~ Sonata Arctica
Journey to the Center of the Mind ~ The Ramones
What's Left of the Flag ~ Flogging Molly
Somewhere Around Nothing ~ Apocalyptica
SK 983 ~ Royal Hunt
Drunken Lullabies ~ Flogging Molly
Faraway ~ Apocalyptica
The Kilburn High Road ~ Flogging Molly
Kellot (Demo) ~ Apocalyptica
Rebels of the Sacred Heart ~ Flogging Molly
Ain't Your Fairytale ~ Sonata Arctica
Magic and Sword ~ .Hack//Sign soundtrack
May the Living Be Dead (In Our Wake) ~ Flogging Molly
Hope ~ Apocalyptica
What a Horrible Night ~ ?
Hall of the Mountain King ~ Apocalyptica

Not really.

When we started it was radio, then cassette then a single disc player, then up to six discs and finally an Ipod. Its generally just set on random and fast forwarded through slow or boring music

I like most of the music listed here, but making a list, just not something we have time to do.

Yeah, me too. I've ripped most of my movie soundtracks to mp3 and archived them on CD-Rs with 120 or so tracks each, and I usually just throw those in the DVD player. When we remember to bring the equipment, we sometimes to iPods with their little speaker set-ups too. We just stick it on shuffle and let 'er rip; we don't create playlists based on themes or type of scene, or anything like that.
