Typical items include sutras and small carved tokens.This means that the items can be any design you like, although the mechanics remains the same (standard action to use). It also means you can create items that wouldn't normally fit - a potion of lightning bolt makes little sense, but a token of lightning bolt, or a jar of lighting etc. would work.You can pool the 500gp each to purchase more expensive items.
