Rope trick vs Portable Hole

I was wondering if a Rope Trick could be captured inside a Portable Hole?

if so,

Could the encapsulated Rope Trick then be moved spatially by folding up the Portable Hole and then walking away with it?

I was thinking that a Rope Trick could be encapsulated by building a structure (Minor Creation) that brought the open Portable Hole up against and then around the closed window of the Rope Trick.

A rope trick is an extra-dimensional space, like a Portable Hole. The PHB says, "It is hazardous to create an extra-dimensional space within an existing extra-dimensional space." So, no, nothing would come of this except Very Bad Things.

If we follow the examples of the Bag of Holding inside a Portable Hole or vice versa, generally death and mayhem are the outcomes.

But you need to be careful because the effect is specific to placing a bag of holidng into a portable hole - it is not specific to other types of extra-dimensional spaces.

Basically the effects of other combinations are left up to the DM.

That combo in question, though, is specifically called out as "Hazerdous" in the description of Rope Trick.

No it does not.

Note: It is hazardous to create an extradimensional space within an existing extradimensional space or to take an extradimensional space into an existing one.

Is the text under the spell description. It does not mention portable holes or bags of holdings specifically.

The combo of bag of holding and portable holes is specifically addressed in the DMG under those magic items themselves - and it is a real bad thing to do.

If a bag of holding is placed within a portable hole a rift to the Astral Plane is torn in the space: Bag and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost. If a portable hole is placed within a bag of holding, it opens a gate to the Astral Plane: The hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 10-foot radius are drawn there, destroying the portable hole and bag of holding in the process.

I was loose in my wording, and that appears to have lead to misunderstanding. By "That combo in question", I was referring to Earthbound Angel's "I was wondering if a Rope Trick could be captured inside a Portable Hole?" in combination with the "Basically the effects of other combinations are left up to the DM." from you. I left the rest of the quote in there, and didn't bother to specify what exactly I meant by "That combo in question", so it appears you took my meaning to be "Bag of Holding + Portable Hole", when that was not my intent.

Yeah you had confused me.

I thought we were basically saying the same thing.

"It is dangerous."

But only the one combination (bag of holding and portable hole) has the danger specified - the rest is up to the DM, but still it should be dangerous and not a good idea.

I thought I remembered a FAQ entry on the subject and it basically said that only the bag of holding/portable hole combo resulted in a rift in the Astral Plane because that is the only combination that spells it out as such. But I can't seem to find that reference now. I know I didn't make up the WotC answer on the question of extraplaner spaces within extraplaner spaces.

True, it merely talks about extradimensional spaces in general. However, this is from the DMG text about Portable Holes: "it causes an extradimensional space 10 feet deep to come into being."

So the spell description doesn't mention Portable Holes by name, but it does flag extradimensional spaces as the hazard, and a Portable Hole is an extradimensional space.

Food for thought.

Sorry for stacking 2 replies in a row, but I wanted to come back to post on a tangent. That is, I have houseruled this in my own game. Trying to avoid accidental mishaps of this kind (extradimensional spaces eating up nondimensional spaces or vice versa) is really difficult, especially when you realize how much stuff relies on planar spaces -- teleportation spells, Haversacks, Leomund's Secret Chest, and so on. So my house rule is simply that the only effect of intermingling these items & spells is that things inside don't work. While you're inside a Rope Trick, you can't reach into your Bag of Holding. That might be inconvenient, but it's better than dying and being irretrievable.
