thanks for the hiking report! my kid is still in cub scouts, but I volunteered as the hiking leader. with cubs scouts and parents, you have to go easy. hikes are short 1-3 miles and mostly flat, despite the fact that I live in Colorado. My last hard hike was this year on my 50th birthday. I woke up and my wife asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, and the first thing that popped into my head was "hike up a mountain and sit at the top. Then think about the big picture of my life. " There was a convenient mountain only 45 min drive (green mountain trailhead.) It was a 6.4 mile hike, done in about 3 hrs with 1000 ft of elevation gain. Reaching the top was the easy part, as the trail circled the base of the mountain on the way back. I had a hiking backpack prepped, but it was nowhere near 20% of my body weight. I didn't carry sleeping or camping gear, just water, snacks, first aid, and an extra jacket. I did it as a solo hike, but there was enough traffic that I felt safe doing that. People hiking, a few on bikes or just jogging the whole thing. I ran low on water, since the mountain has 0 shade. I finished off my supply only once I could see my parking lot. Then stopped for a late lunch on the drive home. I have heard horror stories about unpredictable weather on Mt Washington. Not a place I would try solo.
