I think a sequel will be in the works. IF this is really a critical hit, this can become a "two part trilogy" (think of BTTF, Star Wars 456 or PotC). But it will be always set in the Forgotten Realms: it is important to not confuse viewers who don't know about D&D: for the generic Joe, D&D it's "medieval" fantasy, with swords, magic, dragons and castles. Then, remember, there are also series in the works set in FR. Then, if also the two sequels are welcomed, at the end the party will split to let the studio to create new movies without having to have the whole party (thinking about actor's wages) and the ability to create a mix on new character/old character parties. Then, and only then, it will be possible to create "SETTING: A D&D story". But... which setting? Let's be frank: Greyhawk, Dragonlance and Birthright can confuse the newbie viewer, they are fantasy setting with no connection to the three previous movie. And Ravenloft will have to be a higher rathed movie (I don't remember if Honor among Thieves is already PG-13): both the "horror" elements of the domains or, if you want to go to the original, the backstory of Strahd can be... pretty intense. There is no "X" card at the cinema. Excluding the Magic ambientation... we have three really good settings left: Planescape, but this will need a really good story behind it; Spelljammer, but this will make "The space version of the movie that is the fantasy version of Guardians of the Galaxy". Pretty difficult. What's left? Eberron. THAT is quiete nice bet. Just think how much beloved Arcane is. They can even go for the animated route for this. --- Another thing to consider: if this is really a hit, then they have to really hurry up to make a good starter product. The Starter Set is good... but they really need to make something in between the starter set and the core books. A complete game box, with a nice tier 1-2 PHB with classic species and classic classes, and a small DMG with monsters that explain how to play and create adventures. Red + Blue Box updated. Make it a bit more pricey, but still less that the three books. Let people know how to play the game. --- And to end, if the movie is really a big hit, I think they will release it in a combo box: Bluray + minisetting/adventure book. Market vult!
