What you really need is a sparring partner. Someone that you can attack, but not hit very often. And vice versa. Maybe cuz you're both blinded (blindness doesn't seem to affect bot battles, as far as I can tell- if you go blind, don't bother healing it), maybe because you've both got the wind template, etc. You both load up on armor and shields, but don't use weapons. Or spells. Or rage. Or your special move when it comes along. The object being that you want to get to 5th level ASAP, so you can get the better class of jobs. GreyShadow and I battled this morning, in an epic bottle that took 75 log entries to record (or was it 76?). Both of us went up more than a full level. (We also used up a total 350 hp of healing potions). I lost, but GreyShadow generously gave me 40 gp as a thank-you. (Thanks GreyShadow!) What you fight at a particular level has more to do with your equipment than your level. And that will generally depend on how long you have been earning a decent salary (not a ditch-digger) and if you've been battling in xp-rich battles. Take me for instance- the other day I had 100% rage, and so I decided to fight a troll instead of my usual Wraith. I got killed, of course. The next day (after healing up via a few CLW earned from posts) I decided to fight the wraith instead of an orc, which would have been safer, but not as lucrative. I was low on hp, so its first attack killed me, and so I was down to zero hp, with no money, and few prospects for getting more. If I had been smart, I wouldn't have been more cautious (and less greedy) all the way along. As it was, I burned up a lot of hp (and thus gp in the temple) and got very little xp to show for it. I was dumb. The decisions you make vary a lot with where you are in your career. Up to today I was breaking even with Wraith battles. I would take 99 or 104 hp damage or thereabouts, and win 40 gp. Enough for a 100 hp potion of healing. So it was just for xp. Today I got a new helm, a suit of dwarven plate, and went up a level. (Two weeks sorcerer salary, with some interest). I hope that tomorrow I will be able to kill the wraith while taking minimal damage, and build up my cash reserves a bit. Maybe tomorrow or Friday I can fight GreyShadow again, and maybe get to 10th level and the job of court magician. Whatever you do, avoid things like skeletons and kobalds, which don't earn you significant amounts of money when you beat them. The bunny is 5 gp- next is an orc at 20 gp. An orc is chancy however- you need to spar to get high enough to beat it. Then comes the wraith, and then I'm guessing comes the troll. Good luck!
