RPG tools for your PDA

First Post
Back before the crash I know I saw a thread or two on RPG software apps for PDAs. Now that I'm the owner of a shiny new palm pilot, this topic has a lot more interest for me. Anyone care to jump in with a list of apps and where to find them?

Well sir ... I was one of those who started such a thread.

The basic answer I got back was that people seemed to discover two primary uses for the palm.

One is an auto dice roller that would be spreadsheet based, although folks I had talked to said that they had some trouble finding one ... maybe Docs to Go v.8 can do it? I only have v.7 on mine and have not tried.

The other use for it was viewing .pdf files - now I have not tried to do this yet, but there is a prog called PalmPDF out there that is supposed to be the best sort of thing for .pdf files. Even so there would have to be a lot of scrolling left to right and up and down. I think it would be a pain in the neck.

On a separate level, though, I think the palm could be used for simple docs of info, etc. that could be turned into .txt or .doc files and kept on the side. Probably would be of more use for the DM I guess, rather than the player. If you got a Palm keyboard such a thing could be helpful even more, I think.

But from what I know (not much admittedly) if folks like keeping their rpg stuff in comp form they usually just keep it on a laptop that they lug around with them. :)

Personally I still like the old paper, pencil and dice (with proper bag) image, but things and taste can change, of course!

Oh boy do I,

Jamis Buck a long time ago had in it's download section databases for the Tomeraider application that contained the entire 3.0 Monster Manual, a Spell database for all the classes and prestige classes in the PHB and DMG, and also a complete database of feats from the PHB (and I think it had Sword and Fist and some of the other 3.0 splatbooks but I can't be sure). Tomeraider is shareware but I highly suggest buying it to disable the registration reminders. It was great using it though... whenever I played a spellcaster and I summoned a monster/animal I could just use my handy dandy palm pilot to pull up all the information faster than I could find it the Monster Manual (the databases were indexed). The spell database also allowed me to play a wizard without having to bring a PHB or Monster Manual to the game. In fact, some of my co-players went so far as to load up character sheet and dice roller applications on their palm pilots so all they needed to bring to a game was the palm pilot.

You can still get the spell and feat databases here at ENWorld. You'll need to download Tomeraider for your PC to save them into Palm format. You'll also need the Tomeraider app for your Palm.

Go to Palmgear.com and do a search for dungeons and dragons and you'll come up with a few other tools I use.

iSilo is one of the best document readers for the Palm, and I've got the entire SRD in one nice hyperlinked iSilo document. Brilliant for looking up anything (it comes to about 2.7Mb).

The other main use that I have is using a spreadsheet (e.g. documents 2 go) for character sheets. It works well because you can get that whole 'autocalculating' thing going, so I put in boxes for rage or prayer which automatically adjust the character sheet when they are set to 'Y' (I custom build each sheet of course).

I could email my SRD to you if you wish (I don't think it will work well with the free version of iSilo though, but it probably will work with the trial version. but at $19.99 I've never regretted buying the full copy. You can then use iSiloX to grab a website and read it as a linked document and the ENworld archive mode makes it nice and easy to grab a couple of hundred threads from a forum...)

Cheers

Yes, of course - I forgot about iSilo. Thanks Plane - also, thanks for moving it here. I was thinking about that last night myself. :)

Calico Jack and others - what a wonderful collection of stuff! Thanks for posting! Guess Prest0's thread was at a better time than mine. :D

I just went on a spending spree and bought the full version of iSilo. If that offer for your SRD is still open, I'd sure appreciate a copy. My email is presto at 12tomidnight / com.
