RQ abilities and spells

I'm jazzed for this tomorrow. I think that we'll have a good party and it should be fun, as long as we don't find any crocodiles.

Are hero points like fate points? If they are, I am absolutely opposed to their use. I will refuse to use them and may instead ask for something else to offset the imbalance.

Just looking through the sorcery spells, I could see some that could work for a monk, effect-wise. Such as Damage Resistance or Haste. But I don't see a monk carrying around a spell book and all that sort of thing. Verbal or somatic type components could easily be "chi" channelling katas, I suppose...

I could see a monk's focus and concentration leading to psionic abilities. Are there psionics rules available somewhere?

Not yet. Just use the Sorcery mechanic, but a new method of learning will be established. And if you want more monkish spells, create them. Damage Boosting on your hands could be effective.

I will have to rethink this character. it doesn't seem like the RQ rules are very conducive to running a D&D style monk. Seems like I would be running a big, squishy, unarmored guy that would make for a good pin cushion.

Put lots of points into dodge... Instead of relying on game mechanics, use action description to create the monk. I am not sure what exactly you are looking for.

I still don't understand your reluctance on the fate point issue, 'cause it is a lot like saying, "I refuse to add any bonuses to my dice rolls. So, even if the +4 Attack Bonus I have would have allowed me to hit the bad guy, I choose not to apply it and miss."

But you should be in good shape. 'Cause you also need to save Hero Points to buy legendary abilities and such later in your character's life.

Well, I know that there are other mechanics that do much the same thing, I just am opposed to rolling the dice that indicate failure only to say, oh, I use my fate point and change the outcome. And the fact that everyone can do that just seems to me to detract from the verisimilitude of the game. It is not at all like bonuses to weapons and abilities. those are added into the roll from the very start. Maybe I am nit-picking here, I don't know. I mean a sword that does +10 every month or something might be similar. I just don't know in what contexts fate points are actually used. I would be terribly opposed to them if they were used in role-playing moments, but probably not as opposed in combat situations...

I am pretty jazzed too. It has been a crazy week at work and I'm looking forward to playing. How much? Enough to TURN DOWN a ticket to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Louisville Saturday, just so I can play. And I LOVE the Chili Peppers.

They are. The cool thing is if you don't use them, you can save them and then spend them like "money" to buy "Legendary" skills for your character (sortuv like epic stuff). Sortuv kinduv.

I've been looking forward to this ever since we put up the poll. =) Can't wait for tomorrow. Just wish I'd had time to buy a set of dice for my new character. :p

Well, I woulda preferred superheroes, but I still hold out hope that I can lure the group to playing on the comic book side for a bit this year. Except for those who are complete comic book haters. And to you, I say you don't know what you are missing.

I probably can't start until 2 p.m. or so. Wife works until 1 p.m. and all that.
