Rule Pack 1 for JH NameGen Released!

I've not looked into TableSmith before, though I've been meaning to.

Taking a look at their *.tab files, the formats are extremely similar. The only thing I didn't see in the tables I looked at (and I haven't read the documentation) is something akin to the square bracket function Maraxle offers, where inline you can say:

Look[er]

and have it produce "Look" half the time and "Looker" half the time. TS also appears to take the odds from a different perspective, making it slightly harder to change the odds of something coming up. For example in (from what I can see in the layout) TS if you had this:

1, Wood
2-4, Metal
5, Fire
6, Earth

And you wanted to increase the odds of "Wood" coming up by one you'd need to renumber all of the other elements to:

1-2, Wood
3-5, Metal
6, Fire
7, Earth

Whereas in NameGen you'd have started with:

Wood
Metal (3)
Fire
Earth

and to increase the odds on "Wood" by one you'd just add a "(2)" behind its name.

Other than that they look extremely similar (and of course all of this from a guy who's never uses TS, so I could be completely wrong).

Oh, and I couldn't install NameGen on my WinME computer (either version of NameGen), but I had not problem under Win2k, so something's funky there.

You can definitely do that.

Also, I just wanted to let everyone know that my website is giving me troubles. My web hosting provider decided to change my IP without telling me, so jhanson.com points to a blank page. You SHOULD be able to reach it with jhanson.org, but who knows with that bunch of idiots running my server. Sorry about the inconvenience.

jhanson.com brings up a page that says Apache successfully installed.

http://www.jhanson.org brings up the normal website. :D

I couldn't get it to install, so, before I cause any more brain damage working on it, what does this generator offer that Tablesmith does not? http://www.mythosa.net/Utils.html
What trouble did you have with the install? Did you download the small or full install? In order to use the small install, you have to already have the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime files on your PC. If you don't have those, or don't know what they are, use the full install.

As for what this program has to offer, it's free and has a simple, easy to use interface.

Full install, win2k. Kept saying system files were in reuse and it needed to reboot. After 6 reboots or so, I quit.

So does Tablesmith. I'm not trying to belittle your program or anything, was just wondering if you had seen Tablesmith since it sounds like a similar idea, if you had taken a different approach, had a new idea I'd want to check out, etc.

That's the same problem I had, and with the full install. The small install didn't work, either.

Todd, do you know TableSmith well enough to know if what I noted above is right? I'm thinking of getting into TableSmith, too.

Strange. Well, I'm looking at a new installer right now, so that might help. As a quick fix, if you go to the BlockDrop section on my site, you should see a link for downloading the VB6 files right from Microsoft. This combined with the small install should fix things.

According to their site, Tablesmith is shareware. Mine is freeware. I've never used Tablesmith, because I didn't like how the interface looked from the screenshot. But that's just my personal opinion, of course.

I built JH NameGen for my own personal use, as I wanted something that I could customize however I wanted it. I decided to release it because I thought it would be useful to others.

I had a similiar situation. Did you rerun the install program after the first reboot? When I did it installed like a breeze.
