Rules on Sleep?

I have been trying to find the rules governing a character's need sleep but have not been able to find them. What happens if a non-casting character goes with out sleep for several days? Can anyone help me find the rules that cover this?

Fatigue and Exhaustion

They should be listed in the condition summary section of the DMG.

I think in general, characters need 8 hours of sleep, except for elves, who need 4 hours of meditation.

A ring of sustenance allows the wearer to only require 2 hours of sleep. I think that for its price it is a pretty sweet deal

I did not see any rules for when a character becomes Fatigued or Exhausted due to lack of sleep there.

I'm not sure you'll find actual rules for this.

Hhow about following the rules for sleeping in armor?

Sleeping in Armor: A character who sleeps in medium or heavy armor is automatically fatigued the next day. He or she takes a –2 penalty on Strength and Dexterity and can’t charge or run. Sleeping in light armor does not cause fatigue.

I'd run it like this:

1st night without sleep = fatigued, if in light or no armor.
2nd night = exhausted.

1st night with no sleep = exhausted if in medium or heavy armor.

It's really simple, and fits in with the rules very well.

That is basically how I have done it in the past but. It hasn't really been much of an issue. But there was a campaign issue that made me look in my 3.5 books for the rules on sleep and, I was unable to find them. I was wondering if I had just missed them or if the rules really didn't cover what happened when you went with out sleep.

I'd start piling up subdual (non-lethal  ) damage. 1d6 every day. This damage cannot be healed magically, and two day's damage goes away after one day of complete bed rest. i.e. if you didn't sleep for 4 days, you need to rest for 2 days to recover those points (1/1 makes for too long resting periods I think).

As with cold and heat, the subdual damage leaves you fatigued and then exhausted.
