You are assuming that other than having a reasonably well received edition that benefitted from not being 4e; That WOTC has anything to with the wider pop-culture zeitgeist of nostalgia that has propelled D&D beyond levels of popularity not seen since the 80's. FYI, they didn't. WOTC got hilariously lucky. They stumbled on a formula for D&D that is able to ride the current pop-culture wave and not turn away newbies. And that is why they are very resistant to big errata changes, or really looking at 5e's actual issues. Doing so is a risk that they are not willing to take - they do not want to upset the apple cart. IMHO, because they know they got very lucky withthe right edition at the right time. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. You and Darjr are assuming that a PURE clone is the only game with a chance. Palladium and other RPG companies of the time had very D&D adjacent games already for sale. The possible "Not D&D" only needed to be good enough and emulate D&D play close enough.. And you are assuming that the market leader could not be replaced. Everquest was replaced by World of Warcraft, and WoW is in the process of being replaced by Final Fantasy... But those are computer games right? Well D&D is not the top selling RPG in several other countries. So yeah it can be done. And it would be done because the market leader collapsing leaves too much money on the table for people to ignore. I don't think the complaint is so much about achieving perfection. But giving the game the extra 6 or so months it needs to actually address issues pointed out in playtest that made it into the final product unchanged. Umm yeah... They got very very lucky. So easily could have been another 4e turn-off edition... And we'll see going forward if catering to the answers in their survey they way they do makes for a strong consumer base when the current pop culture boom subsides.
