This already got pimped in the Press Releases forum, but I wanted to post a link to that thread in this more-trafficked forum.

Fear the Boot interviews Ryan Dancey

This is, hands down, some of the most interesting commentary on D&D, WotC/TSR, and gamers/gaming in general that I've heard in a very long time. Anyone who cares at all about D&D should listen to it.

No, I am not affiliated with FtB, WotC, or Mr. Dancey. :) I just had a blast listening to it, and will probably listen to it again. Great stuff.

I concur. This was an excellent podcast.

While much of the info presented by Ryan Dancey is something I have heard before (not because it is widely known, rather, simply because Ryan has said it before and I've already read some of what he's had to say) there is much here that is new as well.

Just a great interview and a completely excellent podcast. Go get it now.

It's so nice to hear some smart, insightful commentary instead of the usual cliches. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Buzz. Anyone who's interested in the broader hobby should give it a listen.

On another note, who are the folks at Fear the Boot? The main host in the Dancey interview was really good but I can't seem to find out much about him or his Web site.

Interesting interview.

I have to cast some doubt on Ryan's grasp of the scandinavian market (in the context of the european market). We don't mainly play variations of the WH40k-model at all. At least not in Sweden.

The dominant RPG is a BRP-derived fantasy game (Drakar och Demoner), and the contender is a fairly straight vanilla fantasy game (Eon). There are lots of other games, but they don't borrow much from WH40k.

The exception is of course Mutant Chronicles (a swedish game from the beginning). But that game was bigger outside of Sweden than in Sweden. So the data Ryan's got on that was a it ... iffy, judging by his conclusions.

EDIT: one of the most interesting things about the interview is the comments from the guys who are not Ryan Dancey. The questions they asked, eg about women in roleplaying and the effect of Vampire in regards to that, and "shouldn't we emphasise story to grow the market" have been done to death here and on rpg.net, but for these guys the info Ryan discussed was new. Interesting.

Yes. I was listening to those comments and thinking, "You guys really need to check out the Forge." Most of the indie games coming out now are all addressing this need, and have been for years.
