Been fooling around with their free demo version of this program and I have to say it is great. Here is a sample of the altitude map.

and here is the same world in climate view

There is also rainfall and temperature maps. You can start from scratch when you make a map, or input different parameters and have it make one. Then there are various tools to change things. Really is run to use and experiment with the different settings. Also fun to adjust the altitude and watch the climate and temperatures change.

Anyway, give it a try. :D

Fractal Terrains is a great toy... er, tool for making worlds. :)

I use Fractal Terrains to make worlds and then export the maps to CC2 for customization.

If you like what Dragongirl has posted here, you ain't seen nothing yet. Fractal Terrains can display your world map in any of dozens of accepted globe projection formats. It can even make a "d20" style map like Traveller and GURPS world design systems do. It can also produce a series of images you can use to make a spinning globe map, as well as export in VRML format to allow you to manipulate the globe.

gotta agree - Fractal terrains is top stuff. I found it extremely useful for inspiration - i was just wandering through, creating some worlds, when i accidentally created a world with a few small seas, with some coastal plains, surrounded by enormous mountain ranges over the rest of the globe.

THis immediately started me thinking of potential campaign settings - for example a world in which humans are bit players, with huge dwarf and orc empires going at it hammer-and-tong....
