Well, for my D20 Modern games, I created a pair of new basic classes, the Mystic Hero and the Psychic Hero. Let's face it; the six characteristics are important, but that isn't all there is to the game. Given the heritage of the D20 system, even with a modern genre setting, it is inevitable that for the most part, magics and psionics end up becoming an important part of the majority of games out there. The Basic/AdC/PrC structure really fails in this, with the way magic gets turned on for a character pretty much like flipping a freaking light switch. But for all the other AdCs and PrCs, the basic classes reflect those potential futures by providing talent trees that benefit those later choices in classes. So the Mystic hero is a character who dabbles with the occult, the arcane, and the divine, learning some meager magical capacity before moving on to become a Mage or Acolyte. While the Mystic hero gains access to the capacity to cast a couple 0 and 1st level spells per day, a character sticking with it to 10th level stands a chance to pick up some very useful talents for a spellcaster. The class isn't entirely finished, but it does already have three talent trees developed for it thus far. At the very least, these talent trees could be shuffled off as options to the Smart and Dedicated hero types. One talent tree develops a sense of intuition, a second develops the magical ability, and a third develops magic resistance. Obviously, the Psychic hero Basic Class will be something similar once it is finished.
