Because EN World has grown to a size where we feel that moderation of the boards is putting too much strain on the Admins and Moderators here, we've installed a new modification which we believe will help make these forums a generally friendlier place.
The Intellifilter is a profanity filter which analyzes messageboard traffic, picks out words that appear in posts we moderate, and evolves a customized filter. We're implementing it today, but we understand that there might be problems with it, and so we ask folks to report any problems they're experiencing in the Meta forum.
One of the best features of the new Intellifilter is its "passive aggressive" setting. It is able to pick up on passive-aggressive posts and moderate them accordingly using a series of complex algorithms. This means an end to those "I didn't technically break any rules" situations which we know aggravate us all.

Everytime I sign my name at the end of my posts today, it comes up all smileys. There is no way that is a random accident with the filter. Someone is screwing around with it, and it's not funny.
If this is some kind of joke, it's stupid. My name isn't filtered outside the posts text -- so Ha!
But if this is how you guys want to be, then just screw it. I won't post anymore.

OKay, not that this isn't fun and all ... but all those back posts that the intelli(?)filter has now changed. Are they changed permanently or will they revert back to real words like g.l.a.s.s.e.s instead of permanently showing gl

Frankly, it was bad taste. The references to American Idol, My Little Pony d20 and Heroes Of Monopoly was enough of an April Fool's joke.
And the board admins are goign to have to go through ALL their news and edit them, since the changes are PERMANENT. It turns any word thats deemed stupidly offensive into smilies. I'd know, I tried disabling smilies and editing a post of mine, it comes up as
: )

Frankly, it was bad taste. Admins, if you read this, you're going to lose a lot of hits today because people are finding your joke sophmorish, childish, and downright rude. The titles on the front page was enough for a chuckle. And had you left it at that, we would have smiled, grinned and moved on to regular posting. And I dont care what you think this was beyond what's acceptable.

Doesn't matter if it is or not. You mess with my Story Hour, I get into states that Eric's grandma would not appreciate descriptive text for. Especially since my backup of my Story Hour got nuked recently, and I hadn't copied it down from the website yet. I have to agree with genshou here.
It's one thing to change the way a post appears. It's another thing to utterly alter the post so that its very composition is corrupted. Even using the edit function to view the post source code yields the unfriendly smiley faces. I guess some folks found this funny, but I've seen much better April Fool's pranks that were far less intrusive.
Hell, even last year's sig virus was better, and it only merited a few chuckles from me. Sig virus didn't alter my posts.

Intrusive to who? You're on a forum owned by the mod, Techincally everything here is pretty much his. I doubt you're pulling enough traffic on your storyhours that its going to change the world if you got to read through some smiley faces for a few hours. It's no more permanennt that My Little Pony's new era in D20. Take one day out to laugh at yourselves, then reconvine tomorrow. All these hissy fits are silly. Bront, I couldn't care less about the non-story posts. I only care about the changes to story posts. I mean, I know my Story Hour is small and very infrequently updated, but my stories are as valuable to me as if they are real worlds that I am merely telling our world about (sort of like Atrus's belief about linking books in the Myst series). If I didn't have a Story Hour, I would merely consider it a "tastless joke that left a bad taste in my mouth" (which raises the question of how something tasteless can have a taste...
). But as it stands, I'm not only unamused, but I don't feel any desire to post in any thread but this one for a while, until people forget this little situation.
Not to mention, this board is designed so we can communicate with other members of our community. The Intellifilter is more of a hindrance to basic communication than it is funny and useful combined.

Which are more dangerous—traitors or happy citizens? Rooting out traitors will make you happy. The Intellifilter tells you so. If you are not happy, The Intellifilter will use you as reactor shielding. Being a Troubleshooter is fun. The Intellifilter tells you so. Do you doubt The Intellifilter, citizen? Troubleshooters get shot at, stabbed, mangled, incinerated, poisoned, stapled, blown to bits and accidentally executed. This is so much fun many Troubleshooters go crazy. Actualy, anything posted openly without a disclamer is considered open licence, so someone else could claim ownership and publish what you have there without problems. This is why there is an OGL and why many NDAs specificly point out the internet. This is why many publishers won't take submitions of anything that has been discussed in a public forum, as it becomes public property and becomes a nightmare to publish (Some setting submitions I've specificly seen this rider on).
I'm not a legal expert, but I know public forums are not a good place to post unlicenced intellecual property, and part of your user agreement gives Enworld moderators the right to edit anything posted herin.

I wouldn't worry about the SH until this is all over and you know it is actually damaged. But if it really is that important (and having done my own I can truly understand how personal they are) then you should have back ups of backups. This site has had more then it's fair share of problems and while data hasn't been lost in more then a few years; it is still a chance to take.

I'm surprised that a self-declared copyright written on an open forum that is free to enroll upon would have any validity anyway. And even if it did ... it'd realistically only have validity in the States where you could pay lawyers enough to care. Most other countries wouldn't bother with such things and merely rationalize that if a person wanted something copyrighted they should've bought it through a literary clearinghouse for $15 rather than post it on the internet.
I'm not saying this to be mean ... just saying that placing a copyright on a storyhour seems kinda ... well, like putting a sweater on a statue to keep it warm. You can do it ... and there's nothing wrong with it. But copyrights are generally for those who wish to use something to make money. Storyhours are written for the enjoyment angle - not the financial.

IANAL, but if I'm remembering the details right, official registry of a copyright has no bearing according to the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Simply declaring a copyright is legally sufficient to internationally protect the copyright (provided it cannot be proved to be plagiarism, of course) in all nations that have signed the agreement.
Also, remember that whether or not you are making profit has nothing to do with your right to copyright your own intellectual property. That prevents someone else from making money on it, after all.

BTW, if any of you are into WoW, DONT read their site today. They were just as rude with the introduction of the Alliance race(which we've been waiting for), giving us an April Fool's joke as well.

Not to mention, this board is designed so we can communicate with other members of our community. The Intellifilter is more of a hindrance to basic communication than it is funny and useful combined.

Rest assured, about that I was quite calm.

Not Crothian. I don't think he could bear watching the post count go up while his doesn't.

Actually I could care less about the damn thing. It's more of a curse these days.

It is really annoying, and if this is an April Fool's prank, I am annoyed because it messed up my story hour post.
I'm sorry,

Then I suppose I'd better put a copyright in that Story Hour, eh? I had thought there was one.

Don't say that word without caution! If it doesn't get added to the filter, I can still list Shirl's feats on this forum.

For any of you who were in any doubt -- Intellifilter, of course, does not exist.
