Scrying on intelligent items

Dirty Magurdy

First Post
A member of the group I am running was slain by monsters, lost his gear to them but his body was recovered. The party does not want to tangle with these monsters again and the character who died only wants to retrieve an intelligent short sword that was lost with the rest of his gear, the rest of his treasure isn't worth his life.
The group cleric e-mailed me wanting to know if he could scry on the intelligent sword. The scry spell's first sentence reads that "you can see and hear some creature, which may be at any distance."
So, does the intelligent sword qualify? Curious to hear any advice or opinions on this.
Thanks in advance.

I would say yes, becaus it got a save and mind (kind of soul)

Personaly im using it, one of my players have gotten a inteligent weapon (and dident look the gift horse in the mouth :)) but what they don't know it from the BBEG who can then keep a eye on the group, and oh also it can use Dominate monster as special purpos power, for the final showdown muhaha, this they dont know becaus they havent tryed any kind of identefication (those dear fools).

I agree with Sunking: yes, the scry works on an intelligent sword. It's got a Will save, and the PC has had a relationship with the item, so why not? It's effectively a character-- and apparently an important one, if the PC wants it back badly enough :)

From the SRD section on Intelligent Items:
Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs.
I interpret that to mean that they are treated as "creatures" for purposes that it makes sense to do so.
