Sculpt Spell

The feat "Sculpt Spell" from Complete Arcane allows a change in area shape/effect for +1 spell level.

I have a question about one of the area layouts.

The "4 ten-foot cubes" version, exactly how does that work?

Do the four cubes area have to touch at some point? If not, how much space can you have between each 'cube'?

I can't find the answer anywhere.

Thanks!

You are allowed to place the 4 10x10x10 ft cubes anywhere on the map (both horizontally and vertically), within the limitations of spell (range etc). They don't have to touch one another.

Great, thank you.

1 last question. Do you need to assign which shape you use when you *prepare* the spell, or can you choose the shape (cone, line, cubes, etc) when you *cast* the spell?

Much obliged!

I and few others in another thread on this feel it would be when the metamagic feat is applied. Thus those who prepare their spells chose at that time. Those with spontaneous casting get to apply it on the fly, but they also lose out on getting full use out of Lines and Cones since they don't have a move action to reposition themselves.

I don't agree with this. I believe that you get to choose when the spell is actually cast, similar to the Resist/Protection from Energy spell, which allows you to pick the energy when you cast. Other wise, the feat is of extremely limited use to casters who prepare their spells ahead of time.

Otherwise, the feat is of extremely limited use to casters who prepare their spells ahead of time.

Well, that's not necessarily a reason for it to work this way or another, but I also think, that it is chosen at the time of casting, and not when the spell is prepared.

Well, there are several spells that inherently affect a shapeable area (e.g. the various wall spells). None of them require the caster to define the shape when they prepare the spell, so a spell meta-magically modified to become shapeable shouldn't require it either.

Imho, it's part of choosing the spell's target (area) which happens when the spell is cast.
