Sean's Picks of the Week (0406-0410): Savage Worlds, L5R, TableTop Day, and More!

Tomorrow is TableTop Day, which marks yet another celebration of our hobby known the world around. This week's eclectic selections also celebrate the enormous variety of stuff out there for us gaming geeks!

Phoenix: The Terrible Valley of Static

John Wick is going Savage again, this time in David Jarvis‘ Interface Zero playground.

Under the burning sun, one of the hottest places in the world just became a whole lot more dangerous. In early 2090, Phoenix, Arizona dropped off the map. Nobody knows how or why. Not even the people who live there. But some of them are finding out. And when they do… they’re as good as dead.

Written by Origins Award Winner and Phoenix resident John Wick and David Jarvis, Phoenix, the Terrible Valley of Static pulls back the curtain on this isolated, broken city, giving you all the dirt you’ll need to get involved with any of the new factions which vie for control of Phoenix.

You’ll also find rules for Ghosting in Hyper Reality, new edges, hindrances, specialized gear and new cybernetics!

Imperial Archives

For the Legend of the Five Rings fan who wants everything, here’s a book with a little bit of just that throughout its pages.

The Imperial Archives collects a variety of material for the L5R 4th Edition RPG that we have been unable to fit into previous books. From discussions of Shourido and the office of Shogun, to NPCs and Oni Lords, to a discussion of how to play Courtiers, this book has something for everyone! New mechanics include the Susumu Courtiers, Scorpion maskmakers, and an extensive discussion of options for enhancing shugenja spellcasting. Also included is the official Errata for L5R 4th Edition.

Of Dice and Men

It’s been an eclectic week so far, and today’s Pick is no different. A movie about gamers, but one that will surprise you in multiple ways. Comedy and silly fun is in there, but there’s some real personal drama and “life as we really know it” that will hit you right in the feels.

OF DICE AND MEN, by Cavegirl Productions, is a dramedy feature film based on the critically acclaimed play about tabletop roleplaying gamers by Cameron McNary. A geek movie without the self-loathing.

Few game masters can make the game come to life better than John Francis. Dwarves, Mages and Barbarians jump right off of their character sheets whenever he sits down at the gaming table of frisky suburbanite parents, Linda and Brandon. John Francis’ best friends, sailor-mouthed John Alex and thoughtful jock Jason, bring roguish swagger and knightly nobility to the game. And the object of John Francis’ affection, the feisty Tara, provides all the Half Elven Double Princess backstory they could ever need.

But when Jason enlists to go to Iraq and with the relationship with Tara going nowhere, it may be time for John Francis to hang up his twenty sided dice and take a job on the other side of the country. However, John Francis is about to discover that leaving will prove tougher than facing any dungeon.

OF DICE AND MEN is a blisteringly funny and deeply affecting look at the things that truly matter in life.

Sticking with the highly eclectic nature of my Picks for the week, let’s look at Cakebread & Walton’s OneDice system. One of their latest genre releases for this simple d6-driven system sets characters into the tumultuous era of World War I, with some intriguing options.

OneDice WW1 is a role-playing game set against the backdrop of the Great War of 1914-18. A global conflict, costing millions of lives, the war involved the mobilisation and shattering of the mightiest of armies ever assembled. It was fought on a previously unimaginable industrial scale. Whether you want to play as one of the front-line combatants in the mighty conflict or as a civilian, spy, medic or journalist, all the rules you need are in this book.

There are additional “skins” for adding Occultish Horror and Endless War twists to the world, along with a bunch of adventure seeds to get you started playing quickly.

Whether an enthusiastic recruit, a jaded veteran, or a non-combatant on a special mission – it’s time to enter the grim and dangerous world of OneDice WW1.
