The door opened inward to reveal thirteen lit candles arranged around the inscribed circle upon the stone floor. The slow and steady sound of dripping water gave the room an eerie feeling. The heavy aroma of smoke mixed with various incense hung heavily in the area. Slowly the door was closed and the lone figure that had entered the room stood, letting his eyes adjust to the dim light. He counted the drips of water, his own means of keeping the time in the dark room. On the thirteenth drop of water, the man smiled. It was fitting that it took just that many drops for his sight to adjust to the room's darkness. The figure reached into a pocket on his robe and removed a small package. The package was wrapped in fine silk. The flickering of the candlelight kept the color of the wrapping a mystery. 'Finally,' the figure moved toward the circle and knelt between two candles at the nearest base. 'I have the last component needed to complete the ritual. Soon, I'll tap into a well of power that will give me the strength I need to wrest control of the city away from the King! By the time King Racle realizes what has happened, it will be too late for even his precious Journeymen to save him!' The figure placed the package in the center of the circle and spoke the last words to the ritual. Blue arcane fire flared from the package out to the encompassing circle. The figure laughed in glee as the fire consumed the package, completing the fiendish ritual. ***** You checked your equipment for the umpteenth time. Everything was right were you last put it. Your weapon was in its proper place and all the buckles on your armor were properly secured. You were ready for the day's final test. The sudden stillness in the other people around you brought your attention to the podium. Standing there was King Racle himself. He looked upon the mass of young people before him and smiled. It seemed that smile was meant especially for you. You stood straighter and beamed with pride for advancing as far as you had so far. If you passed this last test, you would be sent out with the others on various missions to help the kingdom of Gadora. You would become a member of an elite fighting force, answerable only to King Racle. You would become a Journeyman. This is your tale. ----- Tales of the Journeymen is a D&D 4e PBEM held on Yahoo groups. I'm looking for 5-6 people interesting in playing the game. Go to the site and check out the files sent to you for character creation as well as house rules. I'm aiming on starting April 2, 2011.
