Sell me on ToEE

I'm currently playing through ToEE for the second time with a lawful good party consisting entirely of dwarves. Even though the game came out over two months ago, I still enjoy playing it.

ToEE is a very cool game, but if you're expecting a deep storyline and memorable characters in the tradition of games like Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment, you'll be disappointed. However, if you want to play a game that accurately translates the D&D 3.5e rules to computer game format, has an excellent turn-based combat system, and features lots of replayability, you'll like ToEE.

Thanks guys... I've started the demo and it seems pretty cool so far...

I was all hot for it too, until I heard about the bugs... I tried the demo, had some problems adjusting to the interface, but persevered and found the demo decent fun. I went halfsies with a buddy on the full version, and the game wouldn't install properly. Fortunately, Atari tech support had my problem listed first on their troubleshooting FAQ. I was able to install and ran the patch as well. The game has worked well, except for freezing up or lagging in the latter part of the game (deep in the Temple with multiple commanded undead tagging along with my lawful evil clerics), taking a ridiculous 5 minutes to "quicksave" (LOL) and not letting me rest at an inn in Nulb. Frankly, the game's a lot of fun until these freeze/lag problems cropped up (that and being completely unable to damage the Balor in the fire node--what are 8th level PCs doing fighting a Balor AND two efreeti?). The game is now practically unplayable at this stage, and unadvanceable due to the Balor guarding the exit from the Fire Node!).

I do miss the more RP intensive BG/PS:T series; this feels more like IWD (hack-n-slash). Even NWN had way more RP in it than ToEE. Still, a good game, and very instructive in how 3.5e combat works. I learned a lot about AoOs from playing it!

I got bored with it pretty quickly. Repetitive combat, is fun in the beginning, but gets old. I lost motivation, gaining levels is not enough and with 3.5 is very quick. If someone is interested, I could sell or trade my copy.

I tried the demo just yesterday night and I liked it. :)

From my first 4-hours experience this is my opinion, but keep in mind that I only tried the demo (without any manual), so I haven't found out yet how to make it work 100%!

- the D&D rules are implemented fairly well, although it looks like not all the game made it into the PC title: as an example, there are no Knowledge skills which eventually they didn't find a way to use them in the PC game

- whether because of limited implementation, because of bugs, or because I haven't found out yet how to do it properly  sometimes it looks like you don't get your whole round worth of actions: specifically, in many occasions it switches to the next character when I am sure you still had the right for example for a 5foot step; another similar case is to use Spellcraft to identify scrolls, I haven't found out if it's possible and how

- IMHO the interface is the best yet for this kind of games: it's a radial interface similar to NWN, but with names instead of symbols which make it much better; something is not obvious tho without the manual to help, and possibly when you get too many layers of choice you may have to scroll the screen

- the look & feel is just fantastic, both the sprites and the background are well painted and the artist made a very nice job; some monsters just look like the ones in the MM (you can walk into a room and immediately know you are in front of an ogre, you cannot be wrong!); also spells effects are well done and quite diverse

- at least the demo has minimal interaction with other characters; I have heard that anyway the story is very straightforward and RP is minimal, nothing even remotely comparable with the Baldur's Gate series

All in all, because of the above and the fact that there is NO multiplayer, I think the game is mostly great as a training ground for the real D&D... to try your combo characters to see if they work ;)

I finished the demo the other day and have to say I enjoyed it, but after reading all the stories of bugs and patches and crashes and what not, I'm really hesitant to drop my limited fundage on a buggy game... Too bad really, I need something to occupy another 40 hours or so of my life :)

Well, I was able to get a glance of the game at our game hosts house, and I liked what I saw. So I decided to buy it, and I had much fun with it. It may be not that roleplaying-intensive, but the rule implentation is better than anything I ever saw.

The bugs are there, but I had little problems (No "Crash to Desktop"s, just sometimes the game hangs up due to its pathfinding system, as it seems.).
With the current fix and a minor tweak in the TOEE.CFG you should be able to play a good game without any more problems (besides maybe some overpowered monsters like Galeb Dur...)

This is a real common misconception. A 5 foot step isn't "just a little movement", it is a seperate movement action. Use the radial command menu and look under "movement". You will find 5 foot step there along with run and charge. I use it so often that I hotkeyed it. If you wanted to make a full attack and then 5 foot step your problem is probably in the game settings. It automatically ends a characters turn after one of several things happen, one of which is after making an attack. Change that setting to "manual only" and you should be fine.

The scroll thing is happening because you can't use spellcraft until after you have cast read magic on the scroll. Cast that first and you should be fine.
