Helived in a time of chaos and was the most potent god in this time. But his strength was too great, and all the other gods united to fighthim and his armies of demons. Rao, the god of order and reason, wasthe main opponent to Tharizdun. And an artifact, named the Crook ofRao, was used during this war to fight Tharizdun's demonic armies.But even the other evil gods fighted him, mostly because they fearedhim (Iuz was not even born in this time).Finally, after years of a war our time could not even imagine,Tharizdun was defeated. He was imprisoned into another plan ofexistence and this plan was sealed by the gods themselves.This was before the time of men, more than 5000 years before our time,before Oearth was named Greyhawk.As you could imagine, Tharizdun only thinks of one thing, to bereleased from his prison and destroy the whole creation afterthat. His milleniums of confinement have not helped to smooth him andthe old god is now completely mad with anger.Tharizdun has already tried to escape during history. And some of hisavatars have already been seen on Oerth, even if they have only alittle part of the power of Dreaded Tharizdun, they have always been areal danger for the world ... as they only seek to deliver the oldgod.Hopefully clerics of Tharizdun are rare and nearly powerless most ofthe time as their god couldn't give them power, beeing confinedhimself in another plane.And this insane god was a part into the Temple of Elemental Evil. Asyou could imagine, the presence of Dreaded Tharizdun, the name youshould not speak, is never a good omen for anything. Especially whenit is involved with other evil gods and demons into a powerful eviltemple.In the Temple of Elemental Evil, Tharizdun used one of his numerousaspects : the God of Elemental Evil, an unclear entity dedicated toevil and elemental powers. Four temples were built, each dedicated toone of the four elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth).Iuz, the Old One, the cambion demi-god was also involved into theTemple of Elemental Evil; with his lover, the demoness Zugtmoy, queenof fungi.The aim of the two powerfull gods and the demoness was uncertain, butthey were able to muster an army of humanoids and demons to attack theviscounty of Verbobonc in the year 569 CY. IF such an attack couldserve Iuz, it couldn't be the only aim of Tharizdun presence ...This first rise of the Temple was broken during the battle of EmridyMeadows, an alliance of powerfull knights and wizards fought forgoodness and was able to rout the demonic army and attacked the Templeafter that.Zugtmoy was impriosonned into the temple depths. And four magicaldoors were erected to seal her from Oerth forever. But the weakenedarmy was not able to destroy the temple and the remnant of its forces. It is to deplore that numerous evil clerics were able to flee beforethe attack.Some of those clerics, with the help of Iuz priests, attempted tenyears later to free Zugtmoy from her imprisonment. They tried to usethe power of some elemental planes to destroy the fours doorscontaining the demoness.A group of strong-minded adventurers prevented that from happening.They were named the Circle and among them were :- Elmo, the actual chief of Hommlet milice- Otis, his brother who died durint the last assault against the Temple- Y'dey, a cleric of St Cuthbert now the Canoness of Hommlet- Linaewen Shee'liin , a female elven wizard who went back toCelene after the fall of the Temple- Aymeric d'Yctis, a knight of Furyondy, now leader of the Crystalmistarmy, and father of two daughters- an unknown human (?) rogue, even the members of the Circle didn'tknow if it was a man or a woman ... she disappeared during the lastfight, just after the death of Otis(This group is partly official, as Y'dey, Elmo and Otis were in thefirst Temple campaign or appeared in the second, and partly a creationfor my campaign: Linaewen, Aymeric and the mysterious rogue.)They entered the Temple, attacked the elemental factions, driving themone against another, and finally destroyed the artifact intended tofree Zugtmoy.During the last fight, the archmage Bigby helped them and the Templeof Elemental Evil collapsed upon itself. It is now ruined and all theunderground levels are said to be closed by hundreds of tons of stone.It was a great victory for the forces of goodness, and all is due tosix adventurers. None knows what could have arrived without theircourageous intervention.We are know in the year 591 CY, a little more than ten years after therebirth of the Temple ... for :- The Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil -This is the main background of the campaign.
