[semi-OT] So who says the older generation isn't cool?

My wife and I went to Office Max today, to get the wheels turning on a run of business cards. (I've decided to have some cards printed up for GenCon and other industry gatherings.) The guy who was helping us was an older guy, heavy gray beard.

So we're chatting for a while, and we're telling him what we want on the card. One of the lines reads "Freelance fiction & RPG writer." And he makes a comment about RPG usually referring to a programming language. I tell him that, in this instance, it refers to roleplaying games.

And he says, "Oh, yeah, I know. I was one of the first generation of fantasy gamers. I still have a copy of Chainmail."

Not, he meant, the new Chainmail miniatures game. The original.

Can I just say... Damn, that's cool, just running into a guy like this at Office Max, of all places. I knew there was a reason I liked Austin. :)

(Of course, these days he mostly plays GURPS, but you can't have everything...) :D

I shall also bust out with a cool old game guy story. At a job I was working last year, there was an older guy in the group I regularly stood around and talked with at break times. One of my friends in the group mentioned trying to get a job as an editor, which prompted Tim (the older guy) to say that he had been a magazine editor in the past. I asked what he edited. He said, in a kind of off-hand way, he was the first editor of a magazine called "The Dragon." When I said I was a gamer, we spent the rest of the day's breaks talking about old D&D, how he got into it, the beginnings of various creatures, the start of AD&D, etc. That evening, I was thinking that he may have been BS'ing me, so I dug out an old Best of Dragon issue...and read the foreword by my co-worker, Tim Kask. His name also shows up in all three (I think...) "core" books of 1st ed. Over the next few days, he brought in Chainmail, the first issue of Dragon, original D&D, etc. for me to flip through. He rocks - I should see if I still have his number...

And the story was going so well. :D
AFAIC, the ending went well, too! :D

Anyway: That's very cool, Mouseferatu! :) Heh. Y'know, older people are probably, on the average, about as cool younger ones - but since we young'uns (sp?) can't relate to them as easily as to those nearer to us in age, we often overlook that...

edit - Also, Mouseferatu, you really should post a thread of the same title on WW's Vampire board. ;)

Sorry. I couldn't help myself. I owned 4 of their albums when I was in 6th grade. I planned on marrying Peter Tork, but somehow it didn't work out.:p
