Setting Up School Gaming Club! W00t!

At this point, it looks like ideas are becoming reality: BHS will have a gaming club, being set up by the one known here as Trevalon and myself (with help and support from others). All we have to do is write up a proposal for the administration to administer funds towards the club (apparently we once had a chess club that was "just" canceled, and it was the administration's idea for giving money (mostly for the sponsor/teacher, a part of the teacher's contracts)). We had to keep it a "gaming" club, which will include board games (Risk tournaments!) and chess as well as roleplaying games, but we'll slip in there mention that the RPGs will be the focus (I think). Probably going to be advertising through the school to get an idea of the interest, and we'll set things up accordingly.

This is so great. We're both excited about this project (actually, a lot of people are getting excited), and if things go well, we'll have a great new activity for the people at BHS (Bolingbrook High School, by the way). Woohoo!

I remember way back in high school when my friend tried to do something like that. It didn't work out, though, because the FCA (Federation of Christian Athletes) objected with the usual; its satanic, it causes suicide, etc. It became so controversial, the the school eventually just said screw it. If I were you, I'd try to keep everything secret and hidden until it is all completely approved. Anyway, good luck--and if it doesn't work out, remember, college is the best four gaming years of your life :)

I disagree with the idea of trying to keep it secret. There is no good reason to do so. It only lends credibility to false suspicions and makes everyone involved look like they have something to hide.

The best approach, IMO, is to be honest about it as a hobby. Educate those that would revile it to the fact that it is just a game. Don't allow small minded people to ruin your fun by hurling unfounded accusations. If you have any problems with other groups, go through the proper channels and lodge the complaints that are warranted to the proper authorities at your school. Treat everyone, including yourselves, with respect and you have a better chance of receiving that same respect in return.

As regular players in a group I run at Games Plus, I can think of no better young gentlemen to run such an organization than Ed (Fayredeth) and Jason (Trevalon). You've got my respect and support, and I wish you well in your efforts. :)

*edit* Mike's right about those college years as being great gaming times you have ahead! :) *end edit*
