Especially with Cannoli, there isn't a massive difference having a good one in the north end versus a good one elsewhere in the state (and cannoli themselves are pretty samey place to place). I am not saying someone who loves Cannoli's shouldn't make the trip there (because they are good in the North End and a person who likes them is more apt to notice the difference).
Keep in mind I am defending the cannoli :) So I don't think cannoli themselves are being overly praised. Like I said, I never hear anyone praising them. But when it comes to the North End I think pretty much anything there has a tendency to be overrated. Don't get me wrong, there is also great food in the North End. It is just sometimes people talk about it the way they talk about New York's magic water. And I think people telling someone who doesn't like cannoli they just need to try one from the North End, is evidence of that. But I don't think upping the quality of ingredients and preparation is likely to change the mind of someone who isn't into the concept in the first place. I know I am this way myself with food. You can dress up a twinkie all you want, I'm never going to be a fan of twinkies. The other part of this is you can still get great cannoli outside the north end. I've had really good ones in Burlington, Lynn, and Everett. Sadly the bakery in Lynn is closed now but they used to be incredible. North End you pay in time getting in, you pay more because things are pricier. So there an added inconvenience factor to consider. And it isn't the way the North End I remember when I was young. It is very gentrified now. So it is also pretty touristy now. Luckily for us all the glorious history of the North end has been preserved for posterity That is probably a smart way to time it.
