Several Changes at Dragon Scale Counters

There have been many changes over the last few weeks at Dragon Scale Counters. Read below to learn more about those changes and what they mean. Feedback is always appreciated.

#1 - We just do not conduct a lot of business via the telephone. In the end it just seems silly to continue paying for a telephone that just sits there. 99% of our communications has always occurred via email. We'd prefer all our future correspondence arrive to us through email at talktosomeone@dragonscalecounters.com. A telephone is still available for those of you who feel the need to have a more real time dialog with us, but understand it will be one of our personal phones when we call you.

#2 - Credit card fees are killing us. Because of "relatively" low sales volumes (or perhaps a lack of business savvy on our parts) our fees have gotten so high that 10% of each sale is going to the credit card company. Additionally, we have grown more and more uncomfortable with the idea of personal information residing on our servers. While there is no indication our security has ever been compromised, we just decided this isn't our core competency. Companies like Paypal (who admittedly have had their own detractors in the past) can still process credit cards and echecks without opening us up to the risk and cost associated with direct card processing. We're certainly open to input from the community on other providers like Paypal who might be used for 3rd-party processing.

#3 - New plastic miniatures have arrived on the scene, and the company producing them seems intent on producing a wide variety. As gamers we're all ecstatic to see this support finally come to the industry. As publishers we're of course less than thrilled. While we've always considered our plastic counters to be worth their price, we do realize that the ever widening variety of plastic miniatures overcomes some but not all of the obstacles plastic counters were meant to address compared to pewter miniatures. As a result we feel like it is time to lower our pricing. While our counters are all on sale because of our anniversary celebration, we have not yet determined what new price points we will set on our product. Constructive input from the community is of course appreciated.

#4 - Lastly, to reflect that counters might not always be our focus, and because we'd like to be known for creating adventures and accessories in addition to counters we're changing our name to DSC Games. The url http://www.dscgames.com should be active within a few days.

Hi Eric --

I wanted to buy the anniversary pack, but I noticed that you still have many of your counters in the 3.0 "long" style. i.e. 10x5 counters and similar.

Do you plan on upgrading your images to support the 3.5 square sizes?

That is a good question, and one we have fielded a number of times since July when the updated rules came out.

The short answer is it depends. To understand our opinion on the matter though you need a little history. We originally made some of our counters contrary to the original facing rules, and received a fair amount of criticism for it. So the next time we did a print run we scrapped what we had and changed some of them to adhere to the rules, even though we didnt really feel like it was appropriate. Then of course 3.5 came out and the very counters we changed are now incorrect again. It leaves a bit of bad taste in our mouth, especially when the facings that changed do not really make any sense outside of the need to make the rules convenient for a mini game.

Some of our counters ultimately will be changed to reflect 3.5 rules, notably giants and the like. Our fire and frost giants were already 10 x 10, and we refused to change them the first time around no matter what the SRD said. Others we likely will not change, such as the horse and the dragon, as well as other creatures that are long in nature. Some monsters ARE long, and deserve to be depicted that way, even if it means exceptions to an otherwise well crafted rule system. I keep meaning to look up the old frost worm (5' by 50' facing IIRC) and see what its new measurements are in the rules...

All that said, if we continue to make counters we MUST continue to look at the industry and listen to our customers, right? Input is always appreciated on this subject.

Whether you use the 3.0 rules or the 3.5 rules I still believe the counters that were made (be they ours or someone elses) are a vast improvement over the scrap paper, candy, and coins we used before. I also believe that in leui of any other alternatives durable plastic counters make the best markers, even if they dont perfectly match the material in the book. Of course, I make them and have a lot tied up in inventory, so I may be biased. :D Now that I have rambled on I will try to close by saying I hope I answered your question and gave you some insight into what we are thinking. If I have not, or you have more questions, feel free to let me know.
