SG: Atlantis - Is Dr. McKay (Rodney) just getting worse?

See, the problem is that Rodney has no patience for other people. When he sees something as a fact, he expects other people to either see it also, or to simply accept that he's right. When they don't, he gets frustrated and tends to be rude.

I don't think he's any worse now. In fact, I think he's been humbled a little by the last few episodes (where he's learning how to be more brave & selfless).

However, I have to admit I was rooting for Rodney in the episode with the ancient lady. It was pretty obvious to me what was going on, and Rodney was just far more blunt than I would have been. ;)

In this case, Rodney knew there was a weapon, suspected that the 'holy woman' really knew what was going on, and was getting impatient with the diplomacy. When they were told 'no', he just came right out and told everyone what he thought. At that point, it was more about being right than being polite, to him. Being so close to Ancient technology, and yet being denied access to it because of (to him) phony religion, was just too much.

Let's face it: Rodney is a geek.

I like him for being the ass he is but I think it is for a reason, somewhere in the show something will happen to him that will change him, just a feeling. He is a good image of a smart man with a low chrisma. ;) He is getting fustrated.

Loved his line "Oh, he is Kirk" from a couple of weeks back.

I'm just waiting for the day when the scifi channel goes HiDef. I'm dying to see SG-1 and BSG in HD now.

I have all the seasons of SG-1 that are out on DVD. I have a progressive scan DVD player hooked up to one of my HD inputs. 1080 lines of resolution. It is frickin' gorgeous. It's as close to HD as you will get until they move to Sci-Fi HD.

And SG-1 did it right. I have a 16:9 tv and they made them for 16:9 tvs so it fills the whole screen; no black bars on top or bottom. :D Farscape is the same way.

Actually, my annoyance with Atlantis was the exact opposite of yours, reveal. I loved McKay's character during Season 6 of SG-1. He was an arrogant know-it-all with no real social skills.

And in the first few episodes of Atlantis...he wasn't McKay. Now he's McKay again, and amusing. I do hope there's character development with him (there already has been, he has shown he has more courage than people thought he did), but I want it to be onscreen, not offscreen like I was concerned they did earlier in the season.

He's not annoying *as often* as he has been, so it stands out more. They were doing it too much at some points. It's like a Jim Carrey comedy: after a while, it's just all the same and just boring.

As for why he doesn't get bitch-slapped: I think it's two part. One, lack of personnel to fill in for him. Two, I think they're saving things up to have some alien REALLY punish him for his impertinence. I think he'll get his and it will be all the more fun because it's so long delayed. :)

OK then, digging deeeep into the pocket book. :)

I tend to think Atlantis' senior staff is starting to come apart a little at the seams.

We're due to see Rodney get his major comeuppance, for sure. As for worse... Nah, he's just back on the horse, no longer quite so overwhelmed by everything, including his own recent near-failures.

Dr. Weyr, though... Elizabeth is heading for a fall in a major way. Espescially
knowing she lost them all once and watching herself die
.

And it's funny how far she might get put down near the end of the season. Shepard as well. I won't spoil but there are changes coming according to hints from those who saw the season ender in England a few weeks back. That and they hired Mitch Peligi (AD Skinner) from X-Files for next season in a military role.

I actually think they have developed Rodney well.. especially in the episode with the ancient wraith ship - The Defiant one - I think was the title. He actually stopped to consider his actions after the wraith sucked the life from that other scientist and Rodney had to babysit while Shepard played hero.
