However, on the verge of a European tour, Mitch and Terry split, citing creative differences.</p><p></p><p>Forming a new band, Fresh Fish, on the skeleton of the old, Mitch proceeded with the tour; during the tour he penned a song, “Star Swan,” that would be recorded on the band’s return to England later that year. The song started off slowly but persistent radio play drove it to Number 2 on the British charts, and the young musician became a pop star.</p><p></p><p>Over the next several years Mitch and Fresh Fish would chart seven Top Ten hits, including two Number Ones (the art-rock ballad “Antiquarian Jane” and the raunchy metal anthem “Bang It Out”) and three Number Twos. After releasing a “Best of...” compilation album, Mitch began devoting more of his time to songwriting and poetry, publishing two books of verse that were well-received critically.</p><p></p><p>Mitch’s success as a musician was perhaps aided by his exotic stage persona. Referring to himself as the Wizard of Avalon, the Poet-Mage, and Childe Roland, the boy from Lancashire affected an otherworldly air of mystery about himself. He spent six months in the south of France studying with a guru whom he would only call, “The Socerer,” and claimed to be learning lost lore from the age of Merlin and Morgan la Fey. Both his songs and poetry reflect an interest in magic and the occult.</p><p></p><p>Mitch married Jane Rothschild but divorced five years later – they have a son, Charlemagne Peregrine. (“Charlie”). Mitch is close with both his ex-wife and his son.</p><p></p><p>Appearance</p><p>Mitch’s usual costume consists of some variation on the following: a colorful embroidered dashiki or fluffy peasant shirt, a silk or velvet frock coat and matching top hat, and flaring bell bottoms over boots or sandals. He wears various pendants, rings and bracelets and accents the outfit with a feather boa or long silk aviator’s scarf. His makeup includes eyeliner and glitter eye shadow as well as earthy lipsticks. In more relaxed settings such as the studio he wears the dashiki over a pair of old blue jeans.</p><p></p><p>Mitch’s dark brown hair is an unruly mane of corkscrew curls worn down to his shoulders.
