Sorry mikebr99, but thats been changed in the Main 3.5 FAQ 03-25-2005 However, in 3.0 hiding while attacking was not an option (the text was changed from 3.0 to 3.5) From the 3.0 PHB, pg 69 "Check: Your Hide check is opposed by the Spot check of anyone who might see you. You can move up to one-half your normal speed and hide at no penalty. At more than one-half and up to your full speed, you suffer a –5 penalty. It’s practically impossible (–20 penalty) to hide while running or charging." No mention of hiding while attacking. In the 3.5 PHB, pg 76 "Check: Your Hide check is opposed by the Spot check of anyone who might see you. You can move up to one-half your normal speed and hide at no penalty. When moving at a speed greater than onehalf but less than your normal speed, you take a -5 penalty. It’s practically impossible (–20 penalty) to hide while attacking, running or charging." They added attacking to the nearly impossible things to do while hiding. However, 3.0 has song and silence which has rules for moving up on someone while hiding and getting in that first attack as a sneak attack. So in a 3.0 game I would rule something like this SD moves up to target using HiPS - target blows spot check. SD Attacks. The first attack counts as a sneak attack and the SD becomes visible, any subsequent attacks in that sequence are normal attacks. SD Has a choice, stay and fight or move away and make another Hide check opposed by the victim's Spot check. Continue till target or SD is dead.
