Hmm, I didn't realize Lt. Ilia was a keeper before she attended Star Fleet Academy.

Seriously though, doesn't this look a LOT like the various Hollywood "sports" movies of the last decade? Air Bud, Angels in the Outfield, Ed, Little Giants, Ladybugs, Rookie of the Year etc etc etc?

those of you who like this movie: it is not one of chau sing-chee's (stephen chau) best.

look into:

mainland 007 (from china with love)
lucky guy
tricky brains
forbidden city cop
god of gamblers II

and others

This is a phenomenally good movie, and is miles beyond 'Hollywood sports movies' in quality, because this one laughs at itself fully, and realizes how over the top it is. I mean, I heard they horribly mangled the movie when they edited it for an 'American' release, but they might have fixed it when they realized how much they screwed it up. But if you see just the one scene when our hero first shows off his soccer skills against a street gang, you'll know how great this movie is.

It's really fun. I saw it in pirated Chinese fansub version, so I'm a bit nervous about the American version, but I plan to go see it.

I think it's a disservice to label Air Bud and the other's mentioned as being typical of "Hollywood sports movies".

While I find the premise interesting & will probably enjoy seeing it, quite frankly I seriously doubt it will be a better misfit "sports" movie than The Bad News Bears, and from what I have seen so far it's main competition is the 96' Nike Commercial Good vs. Evil.

Bah...

I hate to be the naysayer, but when I first heard about Shaolin Soccer, I thought, " This should be too cool! "
Alas, then I saw the trailer, and realized it was another over the top movie... I was so hoping for a realistic movie with a team of Shaolin monks... Oh well... maybe next decade...
