On the Eberron forums, someone thought they might make good PsiForged. Unfortunately, there is little mechanical matchup.
 


How about the second generation of warforged? If you don't like the fluff from the PHBIII?

I mean, look at the first and second Terminators. I see similarities...

As a giant walking dragonshard, I imagine that everyone and their brother would be trying to nap the character and sell them/harness them for some purpose.

How do you figure? They have telepathy for free and psychic resistance. And they also have the "Living construct" quality.

Sure, they don't have the other WF qualities, but again, it might be a result of being a psiforged.
 

Here's a fun thought:

Shardminds are Khyber dragonshards either once used, or currently used, as prisons for fiends or other souls.

If they once were, then the shards actually animated, hunting down the fiend(s) that escaped them. If the latter, then they are walking prisons of the fiends - or a walking tomb for an unfortunate soul that got sucked into them (i.e. like all those shards in the Lair of the Keeper).

Or, use the above, but apply them to Quori. (Thus using the popular Eberron-style elan fluff).

I haven't seen the stats (or don't remember them), but apparently they have some sort of insubstantial, break apart ability or something?

Their racial is that everyone around them grants combat advantage, and then they teleport away.

The flufftext is that they come apart and then come together a few squares away, but this is 4e - change the dang fluff text.
