D&D 5E Share Your Homebrew! (+thread)

doctorbadwolf

Heretic of The Seventh Circle
+thread, in this case, because the goal fo the thread isn’t to get bogged down with pages of criticism and discussion of a single item. Those discussions should live in their own threads.

I figure we have had a couple threads for our house rules, it’s time for a homebrew thread! For the purposes of this thread, “homebrew“ is a term which means, simply, “any game element that has been added to the game by the people playing the game.” So, custom feats, new monster mechanics, variant downtime’s systems, are all homebrew.

What isn’t homebrew? Well, obviously wotc stuff, but also professional options, I’d say, or even anything made by someone you don’t know personally, and shared for general consumption, is not homebrew. I’d also say that anything you’d post in a “share your houserules” thread also isn’t homebrew.

I just recently worked out a new version of my rogue/wizard’s hand crossbow that is double range, +1, reload 6, and can be attuned to a quiver so that it teleports arrows into the revolver chambers after each shot.

We are working on a light crossbow that has a revolving chamber (reload 4), and a grapple shot setting.

In the Greyhawk game I master (using 16th century techlevel) I use some variation on armor, to reflect on the fact that as soon as plate armor of all kinds became mass producible it was more prevalent than chainmail. Also I renamed the light armor stuff (leather and studded leather) for better historical equivalents.

Armor Renaissance AC /Special/Stealth/Min STR
Linen armor light 11

Padded armor light 12

Brigandine Medium 13 /Max. +3 DEX/Min. 10

Breastplate Medium 14/Max. +2 DEX/ Min. 12

Chainmail Medium 14/Max. +2 DEX/Disadv./ Min. 12

Half Plate Medium 15/Max. +2 DEX/Disadv./Min. 14

Three quarter plate heavy 17/Max. +1 DEX/Disadv./Min. 16

Full plate heavy 19/No DEX Mod./Disadv./Min. 18

Also all plate armor has to be fitted to the body.
As you can see I fiddled around a bit with the AC since I also offer some variety of shields:

Heavy cloak (in off-hand) AC+1
Parrying dagger (in off-hand) AC +1
Buckler AC+2
Lantern shield AC+2 (has a built in lantern wit ha blind for light)

Normally no one would use a bigger shield than a buckler asides from military siege situations, since plate armor has become so good.

The shields also reflect a bit the musketeer / swashbuckler character of my homebrew Greyhawk.

Did you fiddle with weapons, as well?

On my game there is a travelling curiosity salesman whose selection goes from pretty pebbles to magical artefacts. I tend to just improvise when the players ask if something catches their eyes. So, when one player asked it, I made up a ring that has a tiny carved dragon head that transforms to the type and colour of dragon that the wearer has last been within 100ft to. The seller could not tell the details, just that it changes occasionally, but the player decided to buy it for 50gp. It was, afterall a piece of obviously magical jewelry. So, now there is a ”ring of dragon type detection” in my game 😂

The fun part begins if they ever figure out how and why it changes, and it does it in the middle of crowd or something. Right now they think it is a sort of a mood ring...

I've had a look through my homebrew onenote file, I have the following:

I have a (sub)race option, a couple of items, and one of my bosses who the players briefly fought and actually managed to survive thanks to the counter ticking down that signalled the arrival of an orcish horde. The Red Talon also has a somewhat unique item which allows him to cast a unique spell inspired by a MtG card of the same name and the shadowblade spell.

I have a number of other spells that are homebrewed from MtG cards as well as many updated spells from earlier editions.

Platinum Dragonborn
Platinum dragonborn were leaders and heroes amongst the dragonborn, thought of in a way similar to a greek demigod or hero, everyone expects great things from a platinum when they are born, though it has been many an age since one was.
Breath Weapon: 15-foot-cone of radiant energy dealing damage or blinding until the start of your next turn.
Resistance to radiant damage.

Dragonfang
Uncommon, requires attunement by a dragonborn
A dragonfang is a magical item common in the ancient dragonborn empire of Arkhosia. Normally these took the form of enchanted daggers, shortswords, or longswords. Each dragonfang is a +1 weapon, when wielded by a dragonborn, they are able to unleash a concentrated burst of their breath weapon through the dragonfang. When you hit with a dragonfang, you can expend a use of your breath weapon to deal additional damage equal to your breath weapon. The damage is the same type as your breath weapon.

Planar Shards
Uncommon, rare, epic, legendary
Planar shards look like small stones with a glow of energy within them. They can be attached to weapons by a skilled weapon smith to grant a weapon additional elemental damage. When attached to a weapon, the weapon counts as magical. Higher quality shards will also provide a non-stacking magic item bonus.

Rarity Magic item bonusDamage die
Uncommon -1d6
Rare -1d8
Epic +11d10
Legendary +12d6

Planar shards are often used as the unique component for magical items. Elemental shards form the key components to wands of fire and elemental resistance armour.

The Red Talon (Altrus)
Medium humanoid (Red dragonborn), lawful evil
AC 16
Hit Points 135 (Bloodied 67)
Speed 30 ft.
Abilities/Saves. Fortitude +9, Will +6
Skills. Athletics +9, Intimidation +9, Perception +6, Stealth +4
Damage Resistance. Fire
Damage Vulnerability. Cold
Senses. Passive Perception 16
Challenge. 5 (1,800 xp)

Legendary Resistance (1/day). If the Red Talon fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Actions
Multi-attack.
The Red Talon makes 2 melee attacks with his lava axe.
Breath Weapon (Recharge 5-6). 15-foot-cone. 6d6 fire [Dex 14 for half]
Lava Axe. Melee: +9 to hit, 2d10+6 fire damage. Can be thrown (+9 to hit, range 20/60) dealing 2d8+6 fire damage. A bonus action must be spent to summon his axe.

Bonus Actions
Knockdown!
The Red Talon can perform the knockdown manoeuvre as a bonus action.
Summon Lava Axe.

Reactions
Grapple.
After being attacked. Make a grapple check (+9 athletics opposed by athletics or acrobatics). Success. Picks up the target and throws them 10 feet away from him. Deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage.

Boss Actions
Form Up!
In the 1st round, the Red Talon commands all of his troops into battle. They all use their reaction to move towards the party.
Blood Lust. In the 2nd round he will charge all of his allies with energy. They all add 1d6 fire damage to their attacks and have advantage on opportunity attacks for this round only.

Bloodied
When the Red Talon is bloodied, his breath weapon is recharged if it has been expended and he immediately makes a breath weapon attack.

Tactics
On his first turn, he will first spend a bonus action to summon his axe.

The Red Talon will breathe flame if his breath weapon is ready and he can catch 2 or more enemies within it. He will not do so if the targets are engaged with his men.

He will spend his action throwing his lava axe if he is not engaged in melee otherwise he will attack two separate targets with each melee attack if possible.

Loot
Eye of the Red Talon.
Assuming someone wants to replace an eye with a mystic gemstone, this item will double the potency of a dragonborn's fire breath weapon and they will also gain the ability to summon a lava axe 1/short rest for 1 minute (no concentration required). Anyone benefits from the second option. Optionally, it counts as a rare planar shard and can be attached to a weapon dealing an extra 1d8 fire damage. If replacing an eye, the added power also comes with a blight, you are vulnerable to cold damage.

Lava Axe
Sorcerer, wizard
2nd-level red magic (conjuration)
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
You cause the earth to erupt pulling forth an axe made of lava. This magic axe lasts until the spell ends. It counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. It deals 2d8 fire damage on a hit and has the versatile (2d10) and thrown (range 20/60) properties.

If you drop the weapon or throw it, it dissipates at the end of the turn. Thereafter, while the spell persists, you can use a bonus action to cause the axe to reappear in your hand.

At higher levels. When you cast this spell using a 3rd- or 4th-level spell slot, the damage increases to 3d8 (3d10). When you cast it using a 5th- or 6th-level spell slot, the damage increases to 4d8 (4d10). When you cast it using a spell slot of 7th-level or higher, the damage increases to 5d8 (5d10).

Did you fiddle with weapons, as well?

Yea, way of. I introduced a two handed flail for 2d4, Reach, applicable for PM and GWM
Also I got the arming sword 1d8 S 1h strength based as opposed to bastard sword (=D&D Long sword)
A Messer/falchion 1d6 S 1h and Kriegsmesser 2d4 S 2h GWM both strength based, the short sword is named Katzbalger for some Landsknecht vibe.
Also I got partisan 1d8 PM and pike 1d10 P , the later only usable in formation.
I also attached a second or third damage type to weapons if feasible so my handaxe is P/B whereas the battle-axe is of the poleaxe type 1d8/1d10 versatile and got P/S/B damage (hammer, axe and thorn).
I introduced a light hammer (1d4) and instead of the maul I got the lucern hammer (basically a warhammer with a long haft) you can go PM with it again.

I also put up rules for some primitive firearms and canons of various sizes and their need in gunpowder and reloading rounds, but my players did not want firearms so I replaced them with crossbows and war machines (ballista and catapults with various ranges and impact areas).
No Bows in my game, to reflect them being almost useless vs. Plate, except e.g. for hunting purposes.
The reason for that: I wanted crossbows(firearms) to be the weapon of choice, but they would not been able to compete vs. bows because of RoF.

I love the idea of a ”legendary/mythical” variant of a dragonborn, and the radiant type fits nicely. I might add this to my game. I actually have a NPC that could well be one, as current group of PC:s have not yet met him, and I last used him in 3.5, where he was a unique type of dragonborn already.

Cool, I'm glad you like it. I love posting homebrew and then seeing what people can do with it, whether via direct import of adapting it to their style of play.

In my campaign world, a platinum dragonborn has recently been born to the High Drake (equivalent to a duke) of Tymanther. In my world the lore behind them is that they are born to other dragonborn, similar to an aasimar showing up randomly in a human bloodline.

Just found this spell in my spell compendium. I haven't used this spell in my campaign but it is a cool spell that Silt518 suggested on these boards a while ago. I think they said it was from the Maleficent movie (not 100% on that though). I really like the idea of the spell, the image of someone having spider-like legs sprouting from their back that they then use for climbing, combat, or a limited defence is a cool one.

Obsidian Spears
Sorcerer, warlock, wizard
Spell idea from Silt518 on ENWorld
3rd-level transmutation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: S, M (a drop of ichor and a sliver of obsidian)
Duration: Concentration, up to one minute
Four obsidian spider-like appendages sprout out from your back. While active, you have a climb speed of 30 feet.

As a bonus action you can make a melee spell attack with a reach of 10 feet. On a successful hit, the target takes 1d6 piercing damage and 1d6 necrotic damage.

As a reaction to being hit, you can gain a +4 bonus to your armour class by using the spears to block the attack, doing so breaks the spears, causing the spell to end.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you increase the necrotic damage by 1d6 for each level above 3rd.

I am now also contemplating the possibility of Tiamat’s Chosen, a dragonborn variant of pure primal chaos. Their scales constantly shifting colours, and their breath/resistance determined randomly each round 🤔
