Sharing is Caring, my Kingmaker ideas!

Vitulv

First Post
Greetings fellow Pathfinders! I'm currently running the Pathfinder Adventure Path Kingmaker, and thought I'd share some stuff I've come up with during the campaign. I am certain you guys also has some stuff to share - maybe you could post it in this thread?

Of course, for all you players; this is pretty much GM-exclusive stuff, and the thread will have lot's of Kingmaker spoilers, so you'd better stop reading now, or you might just ruin your experience.

Before I go on, I'd like to just shortly introduce myself, since this is my first post on EN World. I'm a 32 year old GM from Sweden (please excuse any grammatical mistakes, since English is not my native language). I've been playing roleplaying games for about twenty years or so, starting out with various swedish BRP-variants. For ten years or so, I've been playing mainly 3.x stuff, starting out with D&D 3.5 in 2002-2003 (-ish).

And with that, let's hit the road!

Again guys, massive Kingmaker Spoilers ahead.

Allright then, let's start! And let's start with miniatures!

Stolen Land, the old Sycamore. Inhabited by those wretched mites at war with the Sootscale Kobolds. I went through my miniatures collection (mainly DDM stuff) and realised I didn't really have anything to stand in for mites. With just a few days to go before the game was on, I didn't have time to order and paint up the mites minis from Paizo. It suddenly struck me that I had something that could do as mites, enter Hero Quest goblins:

A bit of blue paint for that outsider skin, and there you go - small, evil fey!

Here's a whole bunch of the mites, please note the leaders shoes. Every self-respecting pack leader should know how to separate left from right.
In the background you can see some of the trolls I got from reapers pre-painted line, on Warmahorde bases to make them 2*2 inch sized on the grid.

Stay tuned for more Kingmaker stuff!

Next up is a little something I made for the Stag Lords fort. I got some gaming paper from the Paizo store (the one with one inch squares) and tried to copy the map in the adventure as good as I can. But since the place is somewhat complicated, with multiple levels, I had to come up with something. From an old cardboard box for beer I managed to build this:

I know, it isn't exactly Dwarven Forge terrain, but my players still enjoyed it.

I was kind of thrilled when I realised there's an owlbear in Stolen Lands. Partly because I own the mini, and had been looking forward to pit my players against it, but also because owlbears are just plain awesome.

It did, however, sink my spirit somewhat when I realised there's a huge owlbear in Rivers Run Red. Now where on earth would I find a huge owlbear mini? Nowhere. I kept reading the AP, and realised there would appear more monsters larger than their normal size later on. Something had to be done about this!

After I did a bit of thinking I realised that the lid on my tobacco box (In sweden we use something called "snus", which is kind of similar to american chewing tobacco) was just about the right size for a huge base (roughly 3*3 inches) and so I made a base out of it that I could use to at least rule-wise make the monsters huge sized just by putting the original mini on the new base. Here:

The "snus"-box...

"bo-hoo, I'm too small to kill the adventurers! :( "

"Raaaawr! Look at me - I'm huge!"

Here's just a little thing I did for Candlemere tower. Or, not really "did" - I didn't really do anything other than arranging my Dwarven Forge terrain and swap the will o' wisps for grells and a gibbering mouther (I'm not very fond of will o' wisps). It turned out quite nice though, I think.

Thank you for your kind words. Here's a little something I made for Rivers Run Red:

The giant turtle Crackjaw! I couldn't find a suitable mini, so I went to the toy store and bought this, and mounted it on a large base. :)

Next up, stuff I've been working on for the Varnhold Vanishing!

"You must spread some Experience Points around before giving it to Vitulv again."

Nice job on the Terrain + Flip mat. An attractive encounter elegantly accomplished on one battlemap. We got WAY more complicated for our Candlemere Tower quest -- but there is something to be said for simplicity.

Kudos on Crackjaw as well.

When you (and others) play with these full battlemaps, do you "hide" anything from the players based on line of sight, proximity, etc? I mean, I use a 1" grid and draw the dungeon or scenes as players progress, so they don't automatically know the layout from the get-go - this seems somewhat impossible with your approach.

I only really prepare full battlemats for quite isolated encounters, such as the Stag Lords fortress. If the characters are exploring a larger dungeon, I either prepare it with Dwarven Forge terrain, and cover it up beforehand with pieces of cloth or cardboard, or I draw as we go on my chessex battle mat.
