Re: Re: (Shark World) The South Sea Islands See this thread for more info on Marakihau and Rongotakafiu in particular http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20403 basic synopsis is that Rongotakafiu (Leader of the Marakihau) was a NE follower of the Shark but had an alignment change as he became older and settled down. Luckily the Sharks 'apparent death' gave him time to reposition himself as guardian of the Islanders. I'd say that these Marakihau are generally neutral (NG- NE) and worship the Shark as a 'god'. They see nothing wrong with his rapacious aptities (the humans practice cannibalism which is a neutral activity in their culture) and so far have had no reason to be concerned by his actions. Actually your limiting of the Sharks domain to the NW could also be a good reason why they remain loyal as 'worshippers from afar! (perhaps when the Shark was defeated Rongotakafiu left and swam south until he found the South Sea Islanders) Each district is different to an extent although the overall culture is the same (the South Sea Islands are based on the Society Islands on Earth and although each Island is different they have many similarities). Think of it as the difference between Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cornwall or perhaps New York, California and Texas. Basically the humans view the Marakihau as 'sacred beings' on the same level as the spirits with whom their shaman interact. They offer sacrifice to placate the Marakihau and respect their power. The Marakihau for their part live in the sea and generally at peace with the Islanders I'd envisaged Rongotakafiu as living in a cave at the edge of the coral reef encircling the Island and being a guardian figure. The link also mentions Poutini as another Merrow and more of a 'Lurker' who watches the humans, isn't atagonistic towards them and who otherwise has no contact with them either (except for the kidnapping incident mentioned). It is possible that other Merrow have other motivations - some maybe NE and decide to seek to rule the humans on their island, some are Neutral and ignore the humans as long as they keep making sacrifices, and some NG ones will protect their charges in return for the ongoing respect. It is also possible that some of the humans will be quite willing to attack and slay any merrow that becomes a threat to their lives (and so upsets the status quo) The Map and the Kraken It would seem to me that Krakens 'enslavement' of his people would disallow the Marakihau from defiantly protecting the Islanders and so the two maybe incompatible. However as stated above perhaps when the Shark was defeated Rongotakafiu and his Marakihau left the NW and swam south until he found the South Sea Islanders and settled down away from their old hunting grounds in order to start anew with a people who did know fear them as bloodthirsty killers. This could create an interesting dynamic as the Kraken and his followers come across these newcomers and seek to control them. It could also provide further rationale for the Human-Merrow interaction as only by cooperating can the two race hope to survive the Kraken. Of course we could move the Islands (as long as its to another tropical area - say something like the Caribean or Indian Ocean)
