Shatter!

Sundaram

First Post
I’m in the process of leveling up my Gunmage with some Warcaster levels in our group’s Iron Heroes, Iron Kingdoms, D&D mashup game.

In the interest of covering my bases with the limited number of spells available to the character, I’ve been considering using SHATTER as a means of ridding foes of their weapons (Sunder) or miscellaneous odds and ends (grenades constructed from ceramic pots or whatever).

I’m not getting a clear picture for what’s involved when using it for a Sunder attempt. It’s a 9th level character so he’d be able to affect up to a single, 90lb object. But I don’t understand how the attack would otherwise play out.

Any clarity from the masses?

Thanks!

If you are referring to shatter, the spell, it doesn't have anything to do with a Sunder attempt, which is an attempt to physically attack an object. When shatter targets an object, it either saves or it doesn't.

And then only if it's attended. Unattended, it gets no save.

Just keep in mind that magical items are unaffected by Shatter.

Which makes it double as a detect magic spell! Don't bother with detect magic, just shatter everything. Anything that doesn't break is useful! :D

You would need to target the single item (not the area effect use of the spell). The held item would grant the wielder a save to negate the effect. If the wielder fails his save, and the item is not magical, it's shattered.

Also, I don't know the classes you are talking about, so they might take care of this. But the spell effect is based on the class level that grants the spell. So you can have a 6th level whatever and 3rd level wizard, the wizard spells are based on caster level 3, not character level 9.

Unless you like potions, which come in normal glass containers. And masterwork items. And adamantine items. And silver items. And mithril items. And pretty much any special material items.

Hey, do you remember the argument about whether the glass in a potion vial (if it is glass or otherwise breakable) is "part of" the magical item that is a potion? ;)

I'd personally say not, since you can pretty easily pour the potion out into another container. ;)

"Ha! I can avoid casting a 0th level spell by instead casting this second level spell!" ;)
