Shield other

If the answer is yes, then:

1. The character is subjected to an attack that deals 15 points of damage.
2. The character only takes half of this damage - 7 points.
3. The amount of damage not taken by the character - 8 points - is taken by Caster A and Caster B.

So a total of 23 points of damage results from the attack: 7 + 8 + 8.

But I suspect one of these two rules will apply:

Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the best one applies.

Same Effect with Differing Results: The same spell can sometimes produce varying effects if applied to the same recipient more than once. Usually the last spell in the series trumps the others. None of the previous spells are actually removed or dispelled, but their effects become irrelevant while the final spell in the series lasts.

So if the two spells have differing caster levels, only the strongest will apply; alternatively, the last spell cast applies, while the first becomes irrelevant.

With either of Hyp's suspicions, casting Shield Other twice on somebody won't do any good.

I suspect, however, that what the OP wanted to know was if there're two shield other's on Character A, by Casters B and C, would Character A only take 1/4 the damage.
I doubt that many DMs would let you pull that off - that just opens the door to casting a boatload of Shield Other's on the melee people, thus having them take next to no damage, and having the casters have either some sort of fast healing effect or load up on the cure wounds and heal spells.

I can't see it working that way; the spell states that you take half damage from attacks.

With two such spells, you have two effects granting you the ability to take half damage from attacks. Much like Monkey Grip and Powerful Build will both let you wield a weapon one size larger than you, but that doesn't mean that both together will let you wield a weapon two sizes larger; you merely gain the ability to wield weapons one size larger from two different sources...

Me neither, but, I'll bet that there's at least one DM out there who might let you stack nearly identical effects. And a larger number of people who'd want to pull it off.

My point was, that since it isn't expressly stated that you can or cannot stack Shield Other's, it was probably what was being asked about.

Thanks. I was wondering if the subject would take half, then half again. More of a thought exercise than anything else: I was thinking up spells or effects that individually are mediocre, but when applied by multiple followers/cohorts become powerful. I have an antagonist NPC with the Leadership feat and am trying to come up with uses for his puny minions (beyond being speedbumps).
