And, since such rumors aren't all over, that would speak to no such playtesting at this time...

Agreed.

That being said, in my experience Eric Noah's original site was a bit unique in the quality and volume of its content. I think it was a bit of a fluke that it came off as it did, and grew to such amazing size.

It definitely was the most well organized of the rumor sites, as I recall, and kept well updated. Memory has it that there were only one or two other really good sites, with a lot of random and only occasionally updated rumor sites. Most of them kind of borrowed from one another as well and eventually kind of consolidated over here.

Now, with more and bigger sites around, I think it would be a bit difficult for a new site to do the same thing - sort of like a new company suddenly cropping up and beating WotC and White Wolf...

Which is to say that it isn't impossible, but I think it unlikely...

True, I think you're right. Aside from this site, which has grown to be more than just D&D (and, as Morrus points out, is preparing for the eventuality with space for it, not to mention playtesters are probably more likely to go to sites like this that are already in place), there's also the Wizards site which was rather minimal to non-existent at the time (as well as their boards).

Still, I just get this nostalgic feeling for those days. It was kind of like the Apple II of D&D news sites. Or maybe the Altair. :)
