Should gems and jewelry be sold for full price?

Question: What are most of you DMs doing with regards to the selling price of gems and jewelry?

By what seems to me to be the strict interpretation of the PH rules, gems and jewelry are not listed as commodities so they should be sold for half price.

From what I have seen though many DMs allow jewelry, and especially gems, to be sold for full price or very near it (and many players carry around their cash in these easily convertable gems).

What do you do in your campaign?

It depends upon how much of those items the players get and whether or not bartering has a big part in your game. If your getting hundreds of gems and jewelry, it's far easier to just sell them for full price and get on with the game. However, if a particular gem is very valuable or part of the story, bartering or using it somehow could make the game very interesting. If an entire night of gaming was devoted to stealing a particular gem, it would probably cheapen the entire experience if you didn't roleplay fencing it. It's completely up to you. There is no right or wrong way, only what is most appropriate for your game and the situation.

IMHO, for gems and art objects, it should depends on the appraise check of the buyer and the charisma of the PC, but I usually give a maximum of 90% of the real value to give the buyer a margin to deal with.

I also use the same +-10% cost when the PCs want to exchange copper/silver/etc... for gold pieces.

When dealing with these, don't forget to look at the gp limit of the community :D
