Should I get the 3.5 DMG and MM, or just the PHB?

It looks like most of the essential rules mechanics changes are in the PHB (with a few in the other books) -- but based on the posted contents of the DMG, I think it's definitely worth picking up for the new & improved format and new information. 'Course, I ordered all three!

I'll probably just buy the MM and get the PHB info from the SRD. My campaign will probably stick to 3.0 for the time being and I'll phase in any 3.5 changes slowly. I don't want all my players to have to buy new books.

Does the MM have a better layout? I always thought it should have a picture for every monster. And it should try to keep all the text for a monster on one page, whenever possible.

That is the advertisement about the MM. Better layout, I think each critter has a pic, no longer splitting in the middle of the stat block, more creatures and easier rules for making your own or advancing monsters.

The DMG seems least necessary to me as a book to have and use at the table, perhaps the new instant PCs will be useful, but the rules and items will be in the srd, and I haven't heard that xp changes.

Funny -- I was wondering how much I wanted all three as well, but the MM was the book I was considering the must have, the other two were more optional.

Although I'm sure eventually I'll pick up all three. I don't know that I'm in a super hurry to do so, though.

That's weird. I was thinking the MM was the least interesting one of the three. I mean, all the monsters in 3.0 MM are still backwards compatible with 3.5 rules. So, it seems like a waste to me.

Ultimately, it's my groups decision. We may all decide to just stay with 3.0, though I probably will get at least the PHB and DMG.

I think if anything I'll be getting the MM & mabye the PH, myself. The new stat-blocks are much, much more elegant than the ones in the existing MM, plus I'm fairly certian it'll have the most new art.

I don't know about the DMG, but the Monster Manual has must buy all over it. Finally adds a lot of information that 3rd party publishers like Privateer have used all along i.e. racial traits!
