Should I pass up the Dragonstar Essential Collection?

Eh. It was well done at first, but the quality dropped sharply after the first two books.

Plus, there's really not all that much setting. At least in the books I have. Sort of a sketchy outline of the Empire and the houses and a few worlds. You'll have to wing it a lot.

Don't pass it up. The Starfarer's Guide alone is worth it. I bought 2 copies when it was fresh. I still ocnsider it a brilliant adaptation of D&D d20 to sci-fi. WOTC really shouldn't have let Star Wars get beaten to the market by DragonStar.

The cost is fantastic, if anything should sell you.

Dragonstar is a great setting, but not totally developed, so you'll need to do some growing of your own, but isn't that why we DM?? :)

Go for it.

Personally, I've never run an actual DragonStar game, but those books are the basis for my current DragonStar Rokugan game - which is a lot more Rokugan than Dragonstar, but is set in a galaxy-spanning empire instead of a single continent.

If you do pick them up, see if you can find a discounted copy of ARSENAL and FACTORY from perpetrated press too. Nice expansions on the theme.

Pity the guy who made them seems to have fallen off the edge of the world... I was looking forward to a vehicle sourcebook, and now it just doesn't seem to be possible...
