Compare 1981 Conan the Barbarian, or the Star Wars films, they both did a great job making their fictional universes look lived-in. Even Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty good at this. I think this contributed a lot to the film feeling so fluffy & ephemeral that it never felt that the stakes mattered much, there was almost no effort put into suspension of disbelief.
