Mob = short for Mobile Object, a term used in especially MMORPGs for what we would call an NPC in a D&D game. Basically anything run by the AI.

It seems to be a pretty pointless addition to the FRP vernacular unless someone is trying to be funny and making a "D&D is so video-gamey" point, but hopefully any snide comments like that are dying out a bit now.

Which again makes me wonder what point there is in using such a term.

On the other hand, it's perfectly possible not to get offended by simply reminding yourself a lot of tabletop rpg players have crpg/mmo experience nowadays.

MOB is simply meant as another word for NPC. Often a "hostile monster". A "red ring" if you've played Baldur's Gate ;)

I know there is a subtle difference, and you know it, and most of us who started out with pen and paper do too. That doesn't mean people who use these words interchangably necessarily do so with an agenda. :)

No, I wasn't trying to be funny and had no intent of poking at the "D&D is too MMO like" wound.

I've been playing MMOs for ten years and sometimes it just slips out to call NPCs and monsters "mobs". While I started with pen-and-paper like most of you, my 400 played days in Everquest has a tendency to stick a lot of words in my head that come out at the wrong time.

Please move on, nothing to see here.
