Sam’s family had just arrived in Douglas to open a General store in the budding town. In 1858 Sam’s father, after hearing of the gold strike in Colorado, moved the business to Denver in hopes of making a better profit with the gold rush. Sam grew up in Denver helping his father in the General Store. He was fascinated with the people that past through the city, especially the gamblers. Sam would go to the saloons after work to watch the gamblers play poker or faro. Being friendly with most of the locals they would even let Sam sit and play in a friendly game of poker, just to teach him the ropes. Sam was too much of a dreamer to stay in one place working as a store clerk. So at the age of 17 Sam left home to make his way in life as a gambler. After 5 years of traveling from town to town Sam is heading back home to Denver, with just a quick stop over in Colorado City. Note: Sam was to young to participate in the Civil War. [/QUOTE]
