Sigh... another d20 character...

First Post
Over the past 2-3 months, my gaming group has been running a series of D&D one-shots and mini-campaigns. You see, we'd been running a long-time Earthdawn campaign, but for various reasons ended it, and because it was the holiday season at the time, agreed to spend a while on some short games until we were ready to start another long-term campaign.

Well, we've reached that point. Now, throughout our stint of one-shots, we've used D20, but our regular GMs had maintained that when we started the new campaign it would be using a different rules system, most likely either Earthdawn or GURPS. None of us have a problem with D20, mind you, we were just accustomed to other systems, and we tend to be the type of players who like a lot of options and flexibility in our game.

However, last week we had a discussion about moving to a new campaign, and the two GMs proposed their new games - a Forgotten Realms campaign, and a Scarred Lands campaign.

To be honest, it kind of threw me, as I wasn't expecting that we'd be sticking with D&D. So now I find myself in the position of having to make new D&D characters. The problem is, I'm having trouble choosing what to play. Nothing seems to be catching my fancy.

Now, I know my problem isn't role-playing burnout; I'm looking forward to playing. Perhaps it's the recent glut of D20, playing a number of different character classes and types. I tend to like playing unusual characters, and so far many of the ideas that have popped into my head aren't too viable under the d20 system - I attribute this to the fact that up until last week I was expecting to play GURPS, and let's face it, the rules system affects character concept.

Anyone had a similar experience of "I just can't make another D&D character!" before, and how did you overcome it? Any suggestions for D&D characters that are maybe a bit outside the mold? I understand that both the Realms and Scarred Lands have their own unique elements, but I have yet to see material for either, so there may be potential there that I'm not aware of yet. I'm open to pretty much any race or class, but I tend to be a bit leery of prestige classes.

What kind of GURPS character were you thinking of? Or Earthdawn? Maybe you can take something you liked about those concepts and 3e-ize them?

For example: if you wanted to play one of those sky-sailing lizard raiders whose names escape me, well, maybe you were a lizardman pirate who was in on the theft and use of a Halruaan skyship? Make him a psychic warrior so you can do the weird 'magic' stuff and you're set. For the Realms, that's practically normal.

Or... They say in the DMG that the one NPC class that might be worthwhile as a PC is the Expert. Make yourself an Engineer or some such and see if you can keep up with the other characters. Might be quite an interesting experiment.

Delemental, why don't you tell us about some of your character concepts, and we'll see if we can't work them out using the D20 rule set.

I admit that I haven't had the problem you are facing. I've made probably hundreds of D&D characters, and several science fiction-y characters too, all using D20 rules. So it seems pretty flexible to me.

Yeah, what she said. :)

Really, I think the great thing about 3E is that it's got the simplicity of a class/level system and almost as much flexibility as a skill-based one.

Pretend the DMs were offering to convert FR or SL to GURPS and decide what you'd play. Then post it here and let us bat it about a bit.

OR you come to the source for all things Scarred Lands! ;)

Character concepts:

A neutral cleric/sorcerer of Nemorga (you like to collect the bodies of your enemies and use them in battle Diablo-esque style)

A barbarian from Albadia that is on the run from the Helliann (the sisterhood that runs the clans), because you have been "touched" by the Slacerians. (Not psionic per say just you know can read and understand Slacerian. ;) )

A Paladin of Madriel/Keeper of the Eternal Flame. Your goal is cleanse the Perforated Plains and the Kelders of all evil and make a large dent into evil.

A Slitheren Rogue. Your a loner and outsider because you deserted your brood for some reason. Thus you are running from them and the Vigils.

How are those for some character concepts?

Just pick what you want to play. Then figure out how to make it.

The fact its a DnD (d20) character doesn't matter if you look at it this way. Once you start designing this way 'system' no longer matters.

If your having problems on 'how' to make the character you want to play bring it here. The members of this board are more than willing to help they may call you a munchkin but who cares.
