I run a campaign and play in a campaign. The one I play in is FR, and basically uses everything WotC that's not for another campaign setting with a few exceptions. (Incarnum, Psionics, Tome of Magic, Book of Nine Swords) The one I run has a set book list because I strongly disliked the changing nature of the rules if the other campaign. (Though we were core + complete, and then they started a second round of completes we're allowing.) The last campaign started when only 2 of the 3 core 3.0 books were out, survived a 3.5 update, and finished last year. This one picked up there. The game I play in ... well, depends on the DM. He sinks huge amounts of $$ into WotC products - is he going to toss that and continue to spend $$ on the new edition or stay with his existing investment? Who knows. I do know that I long ago stopped trying to keep up with purchases to have everything for this game and we borrow them during a session. In the campaign I run, I'll finish out 3.5 with about a 90%-95% likelyhood. That's 2-4 years by some rough estimation. I run slow campaigns that meet every other week and have a waiting list to get in but almost no player turnover. We set the books because we didn't like rules changing with new stuff. On the other hand, I had introduced the Magic Item Compendium (good for a lower-then-average wealth world like mine), so anything is possible. Someone else mentioned 4.5ed. Well, I'm in a gaming position where I really can see how it does shake out before chosing which way to go. I will evaluate the core books, but if that's purchased or borrowed is unknown. I've got time. Cheers, =Blue(23)
