The Fimbulwinter destroyed civilization. All of the great works were lost or destroyed, as were the thirteen orbs. The only bastions of civilization that survived were those deep in the earth or far under water. The Ice Liches count this as year 0, the beginning of their reign.

Six hundred years after the end, a new dawn broke. Down deep in the earth, the remains of the dwarven tribes gave their souls into statues of living magma. The resultant race, a mere 300 members in number to start, brought heat and light wherever they went. Slowly they grew in numbers in their deep furnaces, and the returned to the surface.
