Since its release has moved beyond speculation. . .

I thought that the Doomsayers might need some new totally unfounded speculation to grind teeth over. While I was on my way home from work tonight I couldn't help but think that if I were running the show, given the recent-ish push for funds at ENWorld, I'd be offering to acquire or partner with the site in order to strengthen the DI. As the second largest d20 forum on the web, it would be foolish for me not to take advantage of ENWorld's influence and fanbase to bolster my new digital venture. Just sayin' ;)

Who is the largest d20 forum on the internet then? RPG.net or are you referring to the WotC boards?

Olaf the Stout

The WotC boards. RPGnet is the largest RPG general discussion forum online. Their d20 traffic is non-existent next to ENWorld's and WotC's. And, of course, RPGnet is not independently owned (which makes acquiring it a far less logical move).

Two words: 5th Edition

It's coming. Oh yes, it is. I have it on good authority that they're only announcing 4th edition now so that they can announce 5th edition in three months.

I don't think it would work. People are always going to need an unofficial place where they can rant/rave about WotC as a faceless corporate giant without said giant looking over their shoulders. Some people who like D&D don't like the idea tha it's a business, they resent it somehow, and wouldn't want to be "forced" into signing up on WotC's forums.

I do think there are some interesting partnership possibilities, particularly in the area of finding gamers.

Indeed, it's because D&D is a business that I was fairly certain that D&D 4e would be released this year (I'm an economics wizard and, given the current state of the industry and consumer purchasing trends, a new edition was pretty much a foregone conclusion). Why people resent that, I'm not entirely certain, though you're right -- it happens a lot. Perhaps it's just the capitalist version of "You always hurt the one you love" ;)

This may be somewhat true, though it's not because I'm an Economics Wizard -- it's because I have multuple levels of the Obsessive Compulsive Spender prestige class ;)
