Sitting here, staring off into space (brain locked)

Mystery Man

First Post
I game tomorrow for the first time after a long restful hiatus. I'm pretty excited and I've been working on my own adventure (not using any modules) of my own creation. So far it's been going well, but now I'm down to the last two freaking rooms on the first part of the adventure and my brain has ceased to function.

the PC's will be exploring the keep of a well known neighbor ( a duchy that has always been on the verge of being a problem and finally is) that has slaughtered his subjects, left his village ashambles and generally become a bad egg. The final two rooms are an bedroom and the dukes chamber.

What level?

Hmmm. An encounter for a bedroom. Where are Joshua Dyal and Reveal when you need them?

The party is an average level of 16 - final encounter is actually going to be an angel of decay that has taken over the duke. This angel of decay should have some cohorts no?

In the bedroom is nothing but instruments of torture (or sexual torture, depending on maturity level of the players). In the duke's chamber is his concubine...who could be
  • A succubus posing as a maiden/cortesan/slave, who is secretly the cause of all the problems with the duke
  • A vampire or vampire spawn who is likewise the root problem
  • Instead of a concubine, use the Duke himself, who surprises the players with his A) Skill at arms, B) Skill in magic, or C) Truly depraved perversions combined with political untouchability (I.E., kill me if you will, but I daresay my brother the king will not look kindly upon my death...)
With your party's level, I'd be sorely tempted to use a 3rd-level aristocrat with political untouchability--killing him would bring dire consequences upon the heads of the PCs.

I see why you're brainlocked. There's not much at level 16 that would even fit in one of those rooms.

Forceuser beat me to the succubus. I'd toss some class levels on her. Maybe rogue or sorceror.

Maybe make the Duke a ghost? He's being eternally punished for taking the succubus as a lover and betraying his wife.

I'm saving that 3rd level aristocrat for another time. :) This particular duke is a moron who's greed and pride got him in over his head. The players know him to be a troublemaker and constantly on the verge of ruin due to his inept rule, and this time it's much too late to bail him out.

You're telling me! They have to go through it since it kicks off the hook into the the main part of the campaign.

I daresay that's not a bad idea. Maybe two....

The succubus still works though.

How about a mind flayer in league with the succubus? He was originally empolyed to manipulate those near the duke, so as to prolong his reign. Again, toss some class levels on him.

Wha haha...

What if the last chamber isn't a chamber at all, but a portal to an ALTERNATE plane where the castle is upside down? To find the REAL villain, they would have to progress through an alternate, harder version of the castle and find their way back OUT.

I saw this in a video game before, and I REALLY enjoyed the concept.
