It would have been released, except as NC-17 or Unrated instead of an R. Studios don't want to do that since neither makes as much money as an R rated film (which doesn't make as much money as a PG-13). Studios are soley interested in how much money they will be making (which is why they didn't put up much of a fight for splitting the film into 2 parts...double your money). In America, the MPAA isn't an official government organization like the censor boards in Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. They have no authority to ban anything. They just assign the ratings. True, they can be arbitrary, but it's better than having a film being flat-out illegal to watch or own (or visually censored as with nudity in Japan).* Anyway, this is Tarantino we're talking about here. I seriously doubt that the box office would have been hurt that much. Honestly, I think that most of the color change is due to what this thread is about: Six versions of the dvd being released. The "Super Duper This One Is Really Uncut And The B&W Scenes Are In Color Now" release they are saving for last. That's probably the big ace in the hole that they know will motivate people who already own a version of the dvd to pick up another one. I'm kind of disgusted with this whole "multiple dvds" deal, myself. We get X-Men then X-Men 1.5 a year later? Give me a break! BTW, does anyone else remember the quote from Tarantino back when he first hit it big, when he said that he doesn't believe in director's cuts and thinks they're stupid and that what you see on the screen is the director's cut? I guess he doesn't feel so bad about it now since he'll be making money from all those 6 dvd versions. :\ *Just as a side note, there are technically some films that are illegal such as kiddie porn and beastiality. If you own a movie which features hardcore sex with a child or animal, you will end up in jail.
