i want to offer a prize for a challenge that will benefit one skill. The benefit will be either a) roll two dice, apply the better of the two or b) allow a re-roll on that skill. i'm thinking they could use this benefit once per day. The skill would have to be something active like "open lock" where they would have a sense for the DC and if they succeeded or not. Listen wouldn't work most of the time because you don't know that you failed a listen check (unless you are an Order of the Stick character).
a) Bob the Rogue gets two dice for his disarm trap skill, he rolls a 15 and a 7.
b) Bob the Rogue rolls a 7 on his disarm check, re-rolls and gets a 15.
What are the pro's and con's of each?
My initial thoughts:
While they are very similar, there are subtle differences. With b) the player activates it when they have failed, using the benefit to recover from a failure. A) puts an emphasis on knowing which check is important. A) is proactive, b) is reactive. i personally prefer a) because it makes the player think before they act.
